Facebook Responds to Users, Yanks New TOS

Facebook Responds to Users, Yanks New TOS

Don’t let anyone ever tell you that complaining gets you nowhere. Following an uproar from its user community after altering its terms of service to give Facebook more control over user content, the company has relented and changed the terms back to their original condition.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change in a post on the Facebook Blog, made late Tuesday night. “Based on this feedback, we have decided to return to our previous terms of use while we resolve the issues that people have raised,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Leopard, Safari Flaw Found

Leopard, Safari Flaw Found

Software developer Brian Mastenbrook has revealed a serious flaw in Safari, the default Web browser included with Mac OS X 10.5, a.k.a. Leopard, which also affects Safari for PC. According to Vnunet, the problem can theoretically let hackers steal information,

When the browser interacts with RSS feeds, it makes the user’s personal information vulnerable, Mastenbrook claims.

In his blog he wrote:

"Safari … is vulnerable to an attack that allows a malicious web site to read files on a user’s hard drive without user intervention."

ZoneAlarm Unleashes Force Field

It’s certainly a clever idea. Computer security company Zone Alarm has come up with Force Field, a plug-in that creates a virtual user when a user goes online, with that virtual user destroyed at the end of the session. It protects the real web browser by deflecting all attacks from malicious sites, phishers, key loggers and others that can install malware. Once the session ends, the virtualized file system, including any malware, is simply destroyed.

It’s currently only available for PCs running Windows XP or Vista, and Zone Alarm claims it will work in co-ordination with other security products.

Google Still Tops, But Apple Cracks Top 10

Google Still Tops, But Apple Cracks Top 10

Maybe it was anticipation for the much-hyped iPhone, maybe it was the lure of DRM-free music from on the way from EMI, but new figures from market analysis firm comScore show Apple as the fastest-growing online property during May 2007, and the interest was enough to put the electronics company into the top ten Web properties for the month. According to comScore, the number of unique visitors to Apple’s online properties increased by 5 percent from April to May, climbing to a total of over 120 million visitors and potentially reaching over 15 percent of all Internet users.

Study Reveals iPhone Text Input Woes

Study Reveals iPhone Text Input Woes

Rather than relying on the praise and criticism that floats around on Internet message boards and crops up in reviews, the usability consultancy User Centric wanted to take a scientific approach to sizing up the iPhone’s new interface with a longitudinal study.

"While multi-touch technology has been around for over a decade, the unique form factor of the iPhone is very compelling as it opens the door to a whole new set of user experiences,” said Gavin Lew, Managing Director of User Centric. “The first few days after launch spawned reviews of the iPhone, but we wanted to conduct the first independent and objective study with actual iPhone users to separate analyst opinion from the actual everyday user,"

One in Ten Web Pages Malicious, Says Google

In a paper entitled “The Ghost in the Browser” (PDF) presented at the Usenix HotBots ‘07 conference in April, Google researchers outlined a study which performed an in-depth analysis of some 4.5 million Web pages—condensed from a high-level analysis of several billion URLs. The researchers found found that about 700,000 pages looked to contain code which could compromise a user’s computer, and about 450,000 (or 1 in 10) could trigger so-called “drive-by downloads” that could install malicious software without the user’s knowledge, including keyloggers, spyware, and software capable of taking over a user’s machine and turning it into a spam generator.

Are Hard Disk Drives Facing Extinction?

You can now buy a 2GB SD memory card for well under 100 dollars, so it should come as no surprise to hear that Solid State Drives (flash based) will eventually be picking up steam in the mobile PC market. Research firm In-Stat says that figure could reach 50% percent of the market by the year 2013. The company surveyed 389 mobile computer users and researched the current trends in Flash development to come to this conclusion.

Digital Camera Ownership Increasing

As a result of rising penetration, the demographics of digital camera owners are shifting towards people of more moderate means. Additionally, women are increasingly more likely to own digitalcameras and to spur the purchasing decision for the household.

While the demographics of digital camera owners continue to shift towards representing the average Internet user, digital camera owners still show a greater tendency to acquire new technology than non-owners. Digital camera owners’ advanced approach to new technologies is reflected in their technology ownership and product usage covered throughout the study. For example, 26% of digital camera households have a wireless home network, compared to 16% of non-owners.

Researchers Warn Of Infectious Web Sites

The researchers believe that online organized crime groups are breaking into Web servers and surreptitiously inserting code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. Those flaws allow the Web server to install a program that takes control of the user’s computer.

The extent of the attacks is unknown, but the security community has seen numerous cases of personal computers infected when the user merely visits a Web site.
