Verizon Network Extender Takes It Inside
Verizon Wireless has introduced the Verizon Network Extender (enter ZIP code to view product details), designed to improve the performance of Verizon Wireless phones where they hurt the most (and where almost every customer uses them): in their homes. The Verizon Network Extender creates a small, single-cell mobile network for use in a home or building, then pushes users calls and data server back out to Verizon using an existing broadband Internet connection. Users need at least 300 Kbps of upstream bandwidth to use the device, the device should be places near a window so it can pick up time and location information via GPS, and the system does not support EV-DO data, Verizon’s V Cast or location-based services. But for Verizon customers who would like to use their cell phones at home without stepping out onto their frozen-over porches, the Verizon Network Extender might be just the trick.
Verizon and CBS Expand FIOS, Wireless Deal
Communications operator Verizon and broadcast network CBS have expanded on their previous content deals with a new, long-term arrangement that will make a broad swath of CBS programming—including shows like CSI,Survivor, and NCIS— available to both subscribers of Verizon’s FIOS home video service as well as Verizon Wireless’s V Cast mobile media services. The deal also extends Verizon’s reights for retransmission of CBS programming, meaning more CBS programming will be available for on-demand use. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
LG Takes Wrap off Slimmed-Down enV2 Slider
LG updated its popular enV slider for Verizon on Monday with the introduction of the enV2. The newest iteration of the device features extra-large front keys for easier dialing and a slimmed-down form factor.
Both changes were made to accommodate for the ever-growing crowd of chronic text messagers, according to Ehtisham Rabbani, LG’s vice president of product strategy and marketing for mobile phones. “We know the texting audience wants a mobile device that is compact enough to slide easily into pant pockets and handbags without compromising the integrity of the phone’s features,” he said in a statement. “The slimmed-down enV2 offers everything consumers loved about the enV with the added benefit of a larger, more spacious internal screen with large easy-to-text keys.”
Samsung’s FlipShot Arrives on Verizon
Camera phones have been coming into their own lately. Last week, Nokia launched the N82 with its legitimate camera features, and this week, we finally get the long-leaked FlipShot from Samsung and Verizon. With a 3.0-megapixel CCD, the two companies are pushing the phone as yet another digital camera replacement.
Besides its relatively high resolution, the phone has a rotating display that swivels 180 degrees for picture-taking, effectively putting the interior LCD screen on the outside for use as a viewfinder. Other features include PictBridge for printing photos directly from the camera, Verizon V Cast capabilities for mobile music and video, and Bluetooth.
Verizon Intros Samsung SCH-i760 Smartphone

"The SCH-i760 is an exciting handset for Samsung because it features a full QWERTY keypad in a horizontal slider," said Samsung senior VP Peter Skarzynski, in a statement. "This is the next generation in smartphones and features the total business package."
TiVo, RealNetworks Team on Music Streaming
TiVo and RealNetworks have announced owners of broadband-connected TiVo set-top boxes can now tune into RealNetworks’ Rhapsody music subscription service using their TiVo. The first 30 days of Rhapsody service are free, and after that the service will cost $12.99 a month.
“By adding music to our portfolio of broadband offerings, TiVo is the only universal entertainment provider in the living room,” said TiVo president and CEO Tom Rogers, in a statement. “Together, TiVo and Rhapsody have extended the personal viewing experience on TiVo into music, providing consumers with an incredibly easy way to access their favorite artists from their television set.”
LG’s Voyager Takes on iPhone on Verizon
Verizon Wireless has announced a series of four new phones which will serve as the anchor products for the company’s 2007 end-of-year holiday buying season: the Samsung Juke, the LG Venus, the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, and the LG Voyager—the latter of which the company hopes will compete favorably with Apple’s iPhone. Of course, the phones all tie in to Verizon’s V Cast mobile music, video, and media offerings, although the company has yet to reveal pricing and availability information for the new handsets, although prices should range from $100 to $400 with contracts.
Verizon Shows Off MOTORIZR Z6tv
Verizon and Motorola jointly took the wraps off the new MOTORIZR Z6tv, a slider phone designed to take advantage of Verizon’s content delivery systems. The newer incarnation of the previous-gen MOTORIZR Z3 will support V Cast Mobile TV, V Cast Music and Video, as well as applications like VZ Navigator.
At its core, the newer MOTORIZR remains very similar to its older brother, with some minor tweaks. The 1.9-inch LCD now spans a full 2 inches, 20MB of onboard storage has expanded to 50MB, and the phone puts on a smidge of weight – just about two tenths of an ounce, now making it 3.7 ounces. The form factor remains unchanged, along with its 2.0-megapixel camera, microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth compatibility, and basic features.
Motorazr V9m Landing at Verizon, Sprint
Both Verizon Wireless and Sprint have announced they will begin offering the Motorazr V9m mobile phone to customer beginning in September. The V9m is the latest iteration in Motorola’s line of sleek, popular RAZR-style clamshell phones, offering dedicated multimedia features and a shiny stainless steel case. Motorola is hoping the V9m rekindles interest in its Razr line, which has seen sales slump in favor of a few newer, sleeker high-end handsets.
