Like many other things these days, travel can be expensive. And after dropping hundreds of dollars on plane tickets and hotel rooms to visit with friends and family this season, let’s face it… Chances are you won’t have a lot of money left floating around to spend on SkyMall fare like portable foot massagers and universal talking translators that will be met with confused glares from locals. (Who knew the difference between saying “where’s the bathroom” and “your sister is very lovely… for a Chihuahua” was just one misplaced syllable?)

Amex Digital Offers Blu-Ray for MacBooks
At Apple’s introduction of new MacBook models earlier this week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs characterized Blu-ray technology as a "bag of hurt" from the perspective of a manufacturer because the licensing is "so complex." Although we can’t help but note that Apple has backed Blu-ray from very early days and other computer makers don’t seem to be having oodles of trouble working out the licensing issues, Amex Digital is hoping to capitalize on demand for Blu-ray devices while Apple waits for things to "settle down." Amex Digital’s new Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive for MacBook lets users tap into BD single and double-layer media, as well as write DVD±RW discs at 4-8× speeds.
Logitech Makes the SqueezeBox Go Boom
Logitech has taken the wraps of the SqueezeBox Boom a diminutive network music player for its recently-acquired Squeezebox network music system that includes an integrated 30-watt amp and two 3-inch speakers so people can take their tunes anywhere their Squeezebox system can reach.
“The network music player will be the CD player of the 21st century, and Squeezebox Boom is the first player in its class to deliver high-quality audio in a compact, all-in-one design,” said VP and general manager of Logitech’s streaming media business unit Robin Selden, in a statement. “From the streamlined setup to the breakthrough acoustics, the Squeezebox Boom is an entirely new type of network music player. Just plug it in and you’re ready to rock the house.”
Amex Digital Offers Portable DVD Burner
Amex Digital—builder of media centers and the occasional sound card and Skype handset—has announced its new PD-K06e Portable Super Multi Drive, a slim, portable bus-powered DVD burner aimed at folks carrying so-called “netbooks” and other ultra-portable notebook systems that lack a DVD burner of their own.
The PD-K06e operates off power from any available USB port (or from a 5V DC power supply), and supports 20× DVD±R write speeds and 10× write speeds on dual-layer media. The units sports a 2 MB buffer, average access times between 130 and 150 ms, and works with both Windows PCs and Macs.
