We all knew it was just a matter of time until a credible attempt to crack the encyrption used in high-definition DVDs emerged…and that time may be now. A programmer working under the monicker Muslix64 has posted a video, a Java-based program for Windows called BackupHDDVD, and details of how he successfully copied several films, including Warner Bros. Full Metal Jacket and Universal Studios Van Helsing, promising to follow-up with more source code and materials on January 2, 2007, to enable users to copy a wider range of movie titles.

Toshiba Brings HD-DVD to Masses
Toshiba today began the official roll out of its long awaited HD-DVD format via the introduction of new players as well as HD-DVD titles from several studios. This launch effectively kicks off the next generation optical disc wars between the Toshiba/HD-DVD and Sony/Blu-ray Disc camps.
As reported in these stories on News.com and PC Magazine, sales of Toshiba’s HD-DVD players have been rather brisk. While it is too early to say how well received the HD-DVD format will be, especially in lights of delays on the Blu-ray Disc side, movie studios are hedging their bets nonetheless. As News.com pointed out, some major movie studios are backing just one format or the other, while others are backing both as they wait to see which format ultimately triumphs.
HD DVD Hardware And Movie Titles Unveiled
Heralding the beginning of the high-definition home entertainment era, major consumer electronics and IT companies, disc replicators and Hollywood studios each announced plans — at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas — to produce, market and sell HD DVD hardware and content beginning in Q4 2005.
Toshiba Corporation was joined in the announcement by representatives from companies who have pledged to support HD DVD including NEC and SANYO as well as Hollywood’s HBO Video, New Line Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Warner Home Video.
Video Game Business Garnering Star Power
Pierce Brosnan, Jet Li and Cameron Diaz, among others, have lent their voices and likenesses to games. Acclaimed film directors such as the Wachowski brothers shot footage not just for “The Matrix” films but also for the game based on the movies.
Games are no longer the follower, either. The “Van Helsing” video game was released the same day as the movie this month. Soon, more blockbuster game franchises, such as “Halo” and “Doom,” are expected to become the basis of movies.
After a long courtship, these two industries have become intertwined in a young marriage, under the common law of entertainment.
