Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Just days after unveiling its promising new OpenBook subnotebook platform, Via has fired up its PR machine once again to announce another big release from the company: a brand new processor line. On Thursday, Via debuted the Nano, a hyper-efficient processor bound to replace Via’s already efficient C7 processors in subnotebooks, UMPCs, and low-power-usage desktops.

The new 64-bit chips will come in processor speeds ranging from 1.0GHz to 1.8GHz, all with snappy 800Mhz bus speeds. The most efficient model, clocked at 1.0GHz, will consume a maximum of only 5 watts when operating, while Via claims all Nano processors except the fastest should be able to idle with as low as one tenth of a watt. In order to make upgrading to the Nano line easier on manufacturers, it has also been designed for pin-to-pin compatibility with the older C7 processors.

Via OpenBook Brings 3G Web, Bigger Screen

Having carved out an initial footprint in the booming mini-notebook market with its NanoBook reference design, Taiwanese IC manufacturer Via revealed a next-gen competitor to the Asus Eee and its ilk on Tuesday. The Via OpenBook will bring a larger screen along with high-speed wireless connectivity to the ultra-mobile-PC scene.

Although Via has taken a page from Asus in widening the OpenBook’s screen to 8.9 inches, it will leapfrog even Asus’s latest Eee 901 with support for WiMAX, HSDPA, or EV-DO/W-CDMA wireless Internet built in. Like the NanoBook before it, the OpenBook will use Via’s C7-M ULV processor, but will pick up a new integrated graphics chipset from the company, the VX800.

HP Goes With Via In China

HP Goes With Via In China

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new desktop computer aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, the HP Compaq dx2020, and the system is notable not because it’s an HP product exclusively for the Chinese market, but because it isn’t driven by an Intel or AMD processor. Instead, the dx2020 marks the first time a major computer manufacturer is shipping a mass-market PC powered by a processor from Via Technologies.

Wal-Mart Offers Energy Efficient Notebook

Wal-Mart Offers Energy Efficient Notebook

Computer maker Everex Systems and Taiwanese chipmaker Via Technologies today announced what they’re calling the “world’s most energy efficient notebook” in the form of the Everex StepNote NC1500…and Wal-Mart is carrying it for under $498.

“Teaming up with VIA, Everex has been able to create an exciting new category of energy efficient portable computers,” stated John Lin, Everex’s VP of Sales, in a statement. “Unlike products which rely on costly, power hungry processors or potentially hazardous batteries, the ground-breaking design of the NC1500 provides consumers with a true, no-compromise alternative.”

Via readies $250 PC

“The Terra PC is a reference design created by Via that will be licensed to PC makers around the world. The company will show off prototypes at the Computex trade show in Taipei next month, and systems are likely to hit the shelves in different markets worldwide by September or October, said Ravi Pradhan, Via’s manager for India.

The proposed price for the Terra, which includes a monitor, is achieved by picking components with cost in mind. The system, for instance, will run an older 1GHz processor from Via, Pradhan said. It will also come with 128MB of memory, about one-quarter the amount found on typical desktops these days, and a small drive.”

VIA Launches Low Profile Epia Mainboard

From VIA’s press release:

VIA Technologies, Inc today announced the new VIA EPIA MS Mini-ITX mainboard, which has been designed without the standard I/O back plate to enable ultra low profile designs for ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing digital entertainment devices.

Providing greater design flexibility for integration into flat panel or ultra compact personal electronics devices, the new VIA EPIA MS allows developers to do more with the limited space available without forfeiting functionality or connectivity. The traditional PC I/O bracket has been replaced by easily accessible onboard headers for the 6-channel audio, TV-out and USB 2.0 connectivity, with a low profile SODIMM memory slot on the underside to further enhance its ultra slim design

VIA Networking Technologies, Inc today announced the VIA Networking VT6655 WLAN Controller, a single chip solution featuring an IEEE 802.11g media access controller (MAC) and integrated baseband processor. Enabling data rates between wireless devices of up to 54Mbps, WLAN modules based on the VIA Networking VT6655 can deliver the bandwidth necessary for real-time streaming of high-definition digital multimedia content in home networks, and provide high-speed email, web and LAN access to multiple mobile users in corporate environments or public hotspots.

Via Processor Upgrade Targets Digital Home

Via Technologies Inc. tipped details of its next-generation x86 processor core targeted at small, mobile consumer electronics devices and notebook PCs that will populate the new “digital home,” aconcept that has become the PC industry’s latest theme.

The C5J core, code named “Esther,” is made using IBM’s 90- nanometer SOI process, allowing Via to push clock speed to 1 GHz and maintain a similar thermal profile while reducing power consumption to 3.5 W. Heat dissipation is a key metric for Via, which boasts that its processors are some of the coolest in the industry, allowing systems that use them to be fan-free.
