GTA Sales Halted In Thailand After Murder

GTA Sales Halted In Thailand After Murder

Thai video game distributor New Era Interactive Media has announced it is suspending sales of Take Two Interactive’s controversial Grand Theft Auto games after a teenager confessed to committing a robbery and murder in an attempt to recreate a scene from the game.

According to Reuters, the teenager said he wanted to see if it was as easy to rob a taxi in real life as it was in the game. Although the teenager said he did not intend to kill the driver, he was arrested trying to steer the cab backwards out of a street after stabbing the 54 year-old driver with a knife. The mortally-wounded driver was in the back seat; the suspect stabbed the driver when he fought back.

Gears Of War Wins Golden Joystick

Gears Of War Wins Golden Joystick

It was a week for video game awards in the UK. Last week saw not only the BAFTA awards, but also the Golden Joysticks.

Celebrating it’s 25th year, the Golden Joysticks are voted for by gamers, rather than selected by a panel, and almost 750,000 cast their votes.

Gears of War was the big winner. Not only was it Ultimate Game of the Year, it was also Sonopress Xbox Game of the Year, Editor’s Choice and Nuts All-Nighter. In fact, it was the only multiple winner at the awards.

Golden Joystick Nominees Announced

Golden Joystick Nominees AnnouncedBack in 1982 the gaming industry was tiny. But not so small that it couldn’t come up with some awards. So the Golden Joysticks were born. This yearthey’re celebrating their 25th anniversary, and the award nominees have been announced.   Big contenders are rock game “GuitarHero II” and “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories,” which each garnered six nominations, including Best Soundtrackand Ultimate Game.   “Lord of the Rings” and “World of Warcraft,” both multiplayeronline games, came in with five nominations each.   The winners will be announced in London at an October 26 ceremony. There are 17 different categories, ranging from Best Family Game to MobileGame of the Year.   Unsurprisingly, there are fewer nominations for games made for more recent platforms. The Xbox 360, which hit the market in 2005, has just four titles nominated, with two forthe Nintendo Wii, and just one for Sony’s Playstation 3.   One of the most popular categories is One To Watch, a way to gauge the anticipation for upcoming titles. Included in nominationsfor that category is “Halo 3” for Xbox 360 and “Assassin’s Creed” for the PS3, along with “Grand Theft Auto IV.”

Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 and PS3 is expected to be released Oct. 16 of next year, while Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories will debut on the PSP Oct. 17 of this year.

Grand Theft Auto IV, said Rockstar Games, will be brought to the Xbox 360 platform from day one of its global release

"Decaf" GTA: San Andreas Available Oct 18

Take Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games publishing arm has announced it will resume sales of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PlayStation 2 gaming console on October 18, 2005. The new "special" edition of the game will include a DVD with game backstory and a documentary film entitled Sunday Driver.

The new edition of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will not include the now-infamous hidden "Hot Coffee" segment in which a player’s character could simulate sex with a female game character. Take-Two was forced to pull the game from retail distribution in mid-2005 when tinkerers found and exposed the segment, causing the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to revoke the game’s "mature" classification and re-rate it AO or "adults only." Most retailers will not stock AO games.

RockStar Ships GTA: San Andreas For PS2

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be in stores in Europe on October 29th, 2004.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the next installment in the gaming franchise that has sold over 32 million units to date, including over 13 million units of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and over 11 million units of Grand Theft Auto 3.

Violent Video Game Sales Decline

Citing data from market research firm the NPD Group, the Entertainment Software Association said the percentage of “M”-rated games sold fell to 11.9 percent in 2003 from 13.2 percent in 2002. Of the 10 best-selling console titles of the year, by units sold, only one carried an “M” rating.

That game, “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.  , was publicly condemned over the weekend by Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Lieberman. It is also the subject of protests from the Haitian and Cuban communities for what they claim are derogatory remarks.

Florida City Proposal Targets Violent Games

A Florida city is determined to pass a law restricting children’s access to violent computer games despite legal challenges to similar attempts elsewhere, and charges of censorship, its mayor said onFriday.

The ordinance proposed by North Miami City Council was prompted by fury in Miami’s large Haitian American community at Rockstar Game’s top-selling “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” in which players are urged to “kill the Haitians.”

Rockstar owners Take-Two Interactive Software Inc have agreed to cut the offending remarks from future issues.

“This is not about censorship, it’s about inciting violence,” said Mayor Joe Celestin, a Haitian American. “We’re going to take it all the way.”

Federal GTA Lawsuit Update

Also, Give Back Take Two (thanks Hump and Steve Nutley) has complaints from The New York Post about GTA, apparently making the case for how depicting violence in a game is worse than molestation: “This is 10,000 times worse than the worst thing anybody thinks Michael Jackson ever did to a little boy.”

The suit was filed December 23 in state circuit court in Palm Beach County. Attorneys for Rockstar Games Inc. opted to move the case to federal court, and that motion was granted Tuesday. No hearing dates were immediately set.

Things Look Up For Game Industry

Some big-name titles that didn’t make it out in 2003 are instead scheduled for early 2004, and may stave off the burnout that usually comes when a console hits its fourth year, as Sony’s PlayStation 2, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s GameCube are about to do.

Having sold approximately 22 million consoles in North America since launching its PlayStation 2 game console, Sony Computer Entertainment dominates the games market. Historically, game sales tend to dip after new generations of consoles reach the four-year mark. This is the time when so many people own the game consoles that everybody who might buy a PlayStation 2 already owns a PlayStation 2. It’s also the time when people start to lose interest, the market reaches its saturation point and consumers lose interest in existing systems.
