Windows 7 Will Be Called…Windows 7

As a company, Microsoft may not put much stock in numerology, but it could be hoping that a little bit of luck might ride along with this decision. In a first for the company, they’ve decided to make the codename for an upcoming operating system its real name when the product goes to market. Gone are the days of OS names like Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, and high-concept names like Windows Vista. No: the forthcoming WIndows 7 will be officially known as “Windows 7″—and will be the first time Windows has been named for its version number since the bad old days of Windows NT 4.0.

Quantum Cryptography Protects Network

Quantum Cryptography Protects Network

For years, researchers, pundits, and privacy advocates have been hailing quantum cryptography as the best technology for protecting data and network links, but the technology has always been so far off in the future that few people have paid much attention to it. That may all be changing, since the Integrated EU-Project SECOQC (Development Network for Secure Communication Based on Quantum Cryptography) group, led by the Austrian Research Centers, have successfully demonstrated the use of quantum cryptography to secure a standard commercial fiber optic network. Vista Sucessor to Hit in 2009

According to a Microsoft executive, the company is already starting to draw up plans to deliver the Vista successor as early as 2009. Keep in mind that this is likely a large service pack equivalent, although it could be a significant overhaul. Vista shipped more than five years after the introduction of Windows XP and about 2 1/2 years after Windows Service Pack 2 was released. So in the general timeline of things, this would make sense. Gizmodo and PC World are both reporting that the new operating system or service pack has an internal code-name of "Vienna" but Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development for Microsoft’s Windows Core Operating System Division, would not confirm the name.

Philips To Move Out Of Front Projector Biz

Philips has decided to focus its resources on display technologies in which it has a leading position, such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), Plasma and LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon), a rear projection technology. Philips is a global leader in flat TVs (LCD and plasma) and also sees potential in LCOS rear projection, which offers a large screen high definition picture quality with a small footprint.
