Earlier this year, display maker ViewSonic entered the PC business with its Atom-based VPC100 all-in-one computer, sporting a sleek design and—befitting a monitor company—an 18.5-inch display. Now the company is taking another step into the home computing arena, and it’s pumping up the horsepower and dispensing with the display. The new ViewSonic VOT530 and VOT550 mini PCs boast Intel Core 2 Duo processors, Windows 7, high definition video output, low power consumption—and price tags that might appeal to folks who already have displays or HDTVs around looking for a new brain.

ViewSonic VPD400 MovieBook Offers High-Def 4.3-Inch Screen
Display maker ViewSonic has introduced its new VPD400 MovieBook, a high-definition portable media player that enables users to watch videos, listen to music, share photos, and more—at a very wallet-friendly price. The VD400 features an 800 by 480-pixel high-resolution 4.3-inch display that can handle 720p high definition video content, and can play back up to 6 hours of video on a single battery charge.
“Today’s consumers have more gadgets than ever, most dedicated to performing a singular function,” said ViewSonic North America VP and general manager Jeff Volpe, in a statement. “Our new MovieBook is designed to combine many of these individual devices into one, making digital content portable and user friendly.”
ViewSonic’s VMP70 Put USB Media Onto HDTVs
Sometimes all you want to do is show some high-definition video from a hard drive on your HDTV, but…dang it, the TV isn’t networked, there aren’t enough power outlets, there’s no place to put your notebook (or, heaven forfend) your desktop, and even if there were the way the cabling works out everything would downscaled anyway. But it doesn’t have to be that way: if you can put your high-definition video on a USB hard drive or thumb drive, ViewSonic’s new VMP70 direct-connect media player can put it on an HDTV. And, it’ll do with style, supporting both HDMI output and S/PDIF audio for hooking up to a home theater system.
ViewSonic VPC100 Review
Summary
When considering which PC to buy, the terms “all-in-one” and “performance” needn’t be mutually exclusive: Look no further than Dell’s XPS One, HP’s TouchSmart, or Apple’s iMac product lines for proof. These machines are outfitted with components that render them strong enough to keep up with most mainstream conventional desktop rigs. ViewSonic’s All-in-One VPC100 is a whole ‘nother kettle o’ bits, though. While it’s true this computer is priced several hundred dollars less than those other machines, the manufacturer’s component choices sadly render it fit only for the simplest of computing tasks.
ViewSonic Enters PC Business with All-in-One VPC100
ViewSonic has managed to make a name for itself over the years offering decently-specced displays at consumer-friendly prices…now the company is looking to bring that momentum into the PC business with its new VPC100 All-in-One computer. Unsurprisingly, the VPC100 is almost nothing but monitor, wrapping an 18.5-inch LCD display in an iMac-like single-slab design with what amounts to an Atom-powered netbook on the inside—and ViewSonic hopes it’ll be a hit with everyone from students and casual home users to libraries, labs, and office settings.
ViewSonic Planning to Enter the Smartphone Business
In the current economic climate, only a few sectors of the technology industry are still experiencing significant growth. On of those is the smartphone business, where—despite the tough economic times—consumers are increasingly eager to upgrade from basic phones to media- and Internet-capable smartphones that offer advanced features.
To that end, low-cost display maker ViewSonic, perhaps best known for its affordable flat-panel displays and photo frames—has announced it plans to enter the smartphone business, as part of its vision of being a player in the display business at sizes all the way from 3 to 300 inches. The company first plans to target the Chinese market, then migrate the products to Europe and North America.
