VMware Dives into Mobile Virtualization

Although there’s no denying that virtualization has revolutionized the server and software development worlds—and is even having an impact on some consumers—are we really ready for virtualization on mobile phones? VMware seems to think so, and has announced a new VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform based on technology it acquired with France’s Trango Virtual Processors last month. The idea behind phone virtualization is to enable movile users to have the benefits of multiple mobile operating systems using just a single handset: they might use one operating system for personal use, then switch to another for work-related tasks.

Microsoft Permits Vista Virtualization

A year after the release of Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft has decided to ease restrictions that forced used to buy the Business or Ultimate Editions of the operating systems if they (legally) wanted to run Vista in a virtualized environment. Effective immediately, Vista’s Basic and Home Premium editions are now licensed for use in virtual environments—a boon to Mac and Linux users who want to occasionally dip into the Vista operating system, and even a benefit to Windows users looking to set up virtualized machines for testing, backup, and other uses. Microsoft has updated its license terms for the Basic and Home Premium editions to reflect the change.

Microsoft Plans to Get All Xen with Linux

After all these years, Microsoft may be showing the first signs of accepting a world in which it co-exists with Linux, rather than treies to browbeat it out of existence: the Redmond software giant and virtualization developer XenSource have announced a collaborative agreement to provide intereroperability between the next version of Windows Server, codenamed Longhorn, and Xen-enabled versions of the Linux operating system. The result would be servers which use virtualization to run Windows and Linux applications side-by side more efficiently and cost-effectively: an appealing prospect for mixed-platform enterprises and computing environments.
