Wal-Mart to sell goods from other vendors on Web

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched an addition to its online business that has outside retailers selling nearly 1 million new items through Walmart.com, a move that could help the world’s largest retailer catch up in the online world.

The Walmart Marketplace has products from categories that include home, baby, toys, apparel, sporting goods and sports memorabilia. The company said it picked the retailers — including eBags, CSN Stores and Pro Team — because they have large product assortments and solid customer service track records.

Netflix, TiVo Create Internet Movie Product

Shares of TiVo jumped 7 percent and shares of Netflix rose 5 percent in after-hours trade on the widely anticipated announcement for a set-top box that represents a kind of technological Holy Grailfor the entertainment industry.

Netflix spokeswoman Shernaz Daver said they targeted a 2005 debut for a product that would let consumers download movies onto their TiVos through high-speed Web connections and watch films at their leisure.

But the plan faces the daunting challenges of winning cooperation from Hollywood, which has hesitated to release its movies on the Web without rock-solid security, fearing it could lose control of its products like music industry labels did.

Wal-Mart Launches Online Music Store

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Tuesday tuned up its online music store, undercutting competitors’ prices as the world’s largest retailer officially launched a venture designed to boost its Web businesses.

The store, which sells digital downloads for 11 percent less than major competitors, expanded its catalog of artists by 50 percent, including exclusive songs from Jessica Simpson, 3 Doors Down, Shania Twain and others, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer said.

USDTV Announces Wireless TV Service

Subscribers must buy a $99 set-top box from regional electronic chain stores and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. outlets. They also have to pay a monthly fee of $19.95 — compared with than cable and satellite service bills that range from about $30 to over $100 per month.

The company has already launched the service in Salt Lake City, Utah, where it where it is based, with more than 25 channels and plans to debut in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Las Vegas, Nevada in the next 30 days. It plans to launch in 30 major markets by end-year.
