World Of Warcraft Movie On The Way

Variety has said the director Sam Raimi has signed to direct a movie version of World of Warcraft. However, it will have to wait until he finishes work on Spiderman 4, which isn’t due in theaters until next year.

Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said:

"Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known," while Raimi added, "At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story."

Raimi’s resume includes a stint as executive producer of Xena: Warrior Princess, and helming the third installment of the Evil Dead series, Army of Darkness.

You knew World of Warcraft (WoW) was big, but you probably never suspected just how big. But it has over 10 million subscribers and over $1.3 billion in revenue annually, and, according to a new list published by Develop magazine, those figures make Blizzard, the company behind the game, the world’s most bankable games studio, ahead of giants like Nintendo and Grand Theft Auto maker Rockstar North.

Develop based its ranking on industry standing, revenues, and sales figures. Editor-in-chief Michael French told the BBC:

Blizzard Entertainment has officially launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack for its popular World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). And if you couldn’t get ahold of your nearest and dearest WoW-playing friends last night, it’s probably because they were in line waiting for the first copies to go on sale at midnight local time…then rushing home to install the software, download required updated, and dive into WoW’s latest and greatest.

World of Warcraft Hits 10 Mln Subscribers

World of Warcraft may have dropped out of headlines when the public at large grew tired of tales of addiction and excess, but its fan base has never stopped growing. On Tuesday, Blizzard announced that the game now boasts 10 million subscribers worldwide.

It was only a little more than a year ago, in September 2006, that Blizzard announced Warcraft membership had spiked to 7 million, indicating that subscriber growth for the company has remained relatively steady. The company also pacified skeptics by clarifying its own definition of a subscriber, which “excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards.”

Computer maker Dell has been known to make special appeals to gamers before, what wit introducing gaming-centric systems in its high-end XPS line and then buying boutique computer maker Alienware, known for cranking out systems designed to dominate LAN parties. But Dell’s latest move not only targets gamers, it specifically targets World of Warcraft fans: a new edition of Dell’s XPS 1730 notebook not only comes with custom World of Warcraft content and pre-loaded games, but the notebooks feature custom case designs that enable player to declare their allegiance to the Alliance or Horde without ever opening their mouths.

World of Warcraft Visa Card Announced

If World of Warcraft is your favorite online addiction you can now feed the need even more via credit. Blizzard Entertainment, makers of this popular Internet video game, have announced a partnership with First National Bank of Omaha for a new World of Warcraft Visa Rewards credit card.

The World of Warcraft Visa Rewards card will be available in 13 different designs, according to Blizzard. These designs include all ten playable character races, as well as for the Horde and Alliance factions and the World of Warcraft logo. In addition to standard give-me’s like no-annual fee and a low introductory APR, gamers equipped with one of these Visas will get points for dollars spent which can be redeemed for a free month of play (1,500 points to be exact).

Think those folks who play the World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game until all hours of the morning are weird, sure, but not exactly threatening because, like, there can’t be that many of them? Think again: Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade has set a new one-day sales record for a PC game in North America and Europe, having sold nearly 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability.

World of Warcraft Hits 7 Mln Players

Just last year, Blizzard Entertainment crowed that it’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft had topped one million subscribers. Now, according to the New York Times, World of Warcraft has reached another milestone: some 7 million players worldwide, putting the company on track to pull in more than $1 billion in 2006 alone. Most WoW subscribers pay about $14 a month to participate in the game.

‘World of Warcraft’ Breaks 1.5M Subscribers

Building on its record-breaking debuts in North America, Korea, and Europe, “World of Warcraft” has reached global peak concurrency – the number of subscribers playing at the same time in each market – of more than 500,000 players.

“All of us at Blizzard are extremely gratified and amazed at the international demand for ‘World of Warcraft,’” said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “From region to region, we’ve seen a phenomenal level of enthusiasm for ‘World of Warcraft,’ and we’re absolutely thrilled people are enjoying the game so much.”

Blizzard Game Faces Server Woes

“Massively multiplayer title World of Warcraft appears to have become a victim of its own success, with developer Blizzard forced to apologise as serious server problems continue to prevent many users from accessing the game.

As many as a quarter of the World of Warcraft servers for North America were reportedly down over the past weekend, following a day-long scheduled outage on Thursday which was meant to fix previous stability and overloading problems.”
