Gateway Names New CEO

Computer maker Gateway has ended more than half a year of hazy direction and undefined leadership by naming former Arrow executive J. Edward Coleman as its new chief executive officer, taking over from Rick Snyder who had been serving as the company’s interim CEO since February 2006 following the resignation of Wayne Inouye.

Coleman most recently worked for Arrow Electronics, where he served as senior video president and then president of Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions. Before Arrow, Coleman was CEO of CompuCom from 1999 to 2004, and had previously occupied leadership positions at Computer Sciences Corporation and at IBM. All told, Coleman brings more than 30 years’ experience in the technology industry to Gateway’s top job.

Gateway CEO Inouye Steps Down

Gateway’s CEO Wayne Inouye has stepped down, effective immediately, in favor of Gateway board chairman and director Rick Snyder, while the company initiates a search for a new CEO. The move comes as Gateway posted its first GAAP profit since 200 and increased its year-to-year operating income by $643 million in 2005.

Inouye took over the company following Gateway’s March 2004 purchase of eMachines, and is credited with helping rebuild and stabilize the company as it faced increased competition from direct marketer Dell and giant computer maker Hewlett-Packard looking to revitalize itself in consumer and business markets. He leaves the company to “pursue other interests,” which is classic corporate-speak for “golf and maybe pondering a memoir,” but in this case, Inouye will be staying on in an advisory capacity during the CEO search.

Microsoft, Gateway Resolve Antitrust Claims

As part of the agreement, Microsoft will provide funds that Gateway expects to use for marketing initiatives, including advertising, sales training and consulting, as well as the research, development and testing of new Gateway products that can run current Microsoft products and Microsoft’s next-generation operating system and productivity software.

“Gateway continues to enjoy a strong relationship with Microsoft and we’re pleased to put these legacy legal issues behind us,” said Wayne Inouye, president and CEO, Gateway. “We look forward to even greater collaboration with Microsoft going forward as we work together towards the future of computing.”

Circuit City To Sell Gateway Computers

Starting next month, Gateway notebook and desktop PCs will be available at more than 600 Circuit City stores in 160 markets nationwide.

Circuit city will offer a complete assortment of Gateway notebook and desktop PCs.  Details about the products will be announced in January when they are available for sale.

”Expanding Gateway’s retail distribution was a key part of our strategy for 2004,” said Wayne Inouye, Gateway’s president and CEO.  “The strong acceptance of Gateway by top retailers andtheir customers this year validates the strength of the brand and its unique value proposition.  We are pleased that Gateway products will be available on the shelves of Circuit City, one of thenation’s largest retailers of PCs and consumer electronics products.”

“The introduction of Gateway products allows Circuit City to offer its customers more choices when it comes to making a PC purchase decision,” said Doug Moore, senior vice president and generalmerchandising manager at Circuit City.  “We are excited to add Gateway’s well-known, high-quality brand to our assortment.”

Gateway Returns To Japan

Leveraging the distribution channels of its eMachines brand, the company now offers its new line of Gateway PCs through leading Japanese retailers including Ishimaru Denki Co. Ltd., Joshin Denki Co. Ltd., Nojima Corp. and Tsukumo Co. Ltd.

eMachines To Be Available In Japan

From Gateway’s press release:

Gateway, Inc. announced today that its eMachines brand of notebook and desktop PCs will be available through Nojima, a leading electronics retailer with 54 stores, centered in the Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo.

Nojima will offer four eMachines notebook PCs and five eMachines desktop computers, starting September 4.

“Nojima has an excellent reputation as a top resource for consumers shopping for computers and electronics,” said Wayne Inouye, Gateway’s president and CEO.  “We’re delighted to work with one of Japan’s retailing visionaries to expand the presence of eMachines notebook and desktop PCs in Japan.”

Gateway Expands Distribution To More Stores

Office Depot has stocked select Gateway PC configurations over the past six months in its retail stores.  Now, Gateway products will be available on an ongoing basis in the stores, as well as on the company’s web site at OfficeDepot.com.

The expanded arrangement with Office Depot furthers Gateway’s strategy to make its PCs available at major retailers in addition to Gateway’s direct channels. Following Gateway’s merger with eMachines in March, the company
announced plans to close its own retail network and develop relationships with key third-party vendors. Since then, the company has announced retail deals with Best Buy, CompUSA, Best Buy Canada and Canadian retailer Future Shop.

Gateway Desktops To Be Sold At CompUSA

Gateway, Inc. today announced that CompUSA, Inc., the nation’s second-largest retailer of PCs, will begin selling Gateway-branded desktops later this week.

The systems will be sold across CompUSA’s retail network of 226 stores nationwide and through the company’s web site.

The availability of Gateway PCs at major retailers — in addition to Gateway’s traditional direct channels of web and phone — follows the closure of its 188 retail stores in April.  Gateway adopted this strategy following its merger in March with eMachines, Inc., whose eMachines-branded products are sold through major retailers in the U.S., Japan and the UK.

Gateway Inks Deal With Canadian Retailers

Gateway announced today that its notebook and desktop PCs will be available across Canada in Best Buy’s 22 retail stores and 109 Future Shop retail stores, beginning the second half of August.

The news of Gateway’s expanded retail distribution follows the announcements that Best Buy’s 622 U.S.-based retail outlets have begun stocking Gateway PCs.

The agreement significantly increases Gateway’s presence in Canada, where the company has been selling PCs for more than four years.  The company’s notebook and desktop PCs will also be available via BestBuy.com and
FutureShop.com.

Gateway Computers To Be Sold At Best Buy

Gateway, Inc. today announced that Best Buy, the nation’s leading retailer of PCs and consumer electronics, will begin selling new Gateway-branded notebooks this month, with desktops to follow.

The systems will be sold across Best Buy’s retail network of 622 stores nationwide. Two notebooks will appear on its shelves this month, while desktop models will be rolled out beginning in August.

Their availability at Best Buy represents an important step in expanding the distribution of Gateway PCs beyond the company’s traditional direct channels, following the closure of its 188 retail stores in April. Gateway adopted this strategy after its merger in March with eMachines, Inc., whose eMachines-branded products are sold through major retailers in the U.S., Japan and the UK.
