Sony has formally launched its Life with PlayStation service for the PlayStation 3, enabling PS3 owners to set up a news, lifestyle, and information channel right on their PS3 consoles. Initially, Life with PlayStation will feature a Live Channel with a world map interface, where users can access information based on place and time. Initial content includes news headlines from Google News, live camera images of almost 60 cities around the world, weather information from the Weather Channel, and cloud imagery provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center.

AT&T to Offer MobiTV to Broadband Customers
AT&T announced today that it is partnering with MobiTV to bring more than 20 television channels to broadband subscribers, including AT&T Worldnet and AT&T Yahoo high speed subscribers, under the name AT&T Broadband TV. Through the deal, AT&T becomes the first U.S. broadband provider to offer a live television subscription service through any broadband connection—and, though MobiTV, users can watch their shows in real time anywhere they can get 500 Kbps or better Internet access.
Telephia: 34.6 Mln Mobile Internet Users
You know all these new mobile phones and services which offer to connect your mobile phone up with the Internet and, you know, improve your quality of life? How many people do you think actually use those services?
According to mobile industry monitoring company Telephia, as of June 2006 the answer for the United States was 34.6 million (PDF). “Mobile Web usage has continued to grow over the past year, as Internet content providers continue to extend their reach into the mobile space,” said Bernard Brenner, Telephia’s Director of Mobile Content in a statement. “As the industry matures and more mobile users continue to complement and extend their Web activity via their wireless devices, Internet content providers are well-positioned to broaden their audience overall.”
Cingular Launches 3G Phones, Video Service
Cingular Wireless today took the wraps off Cingular Video a new on-demand video service for two new 3G mobile phones. For $20 a month, subscribers will be able to download entertainment, news, sports, weather, and other video clips, as well as segments of their favorite shows from networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, CNN, ESPN, Disney, and the Cartoon Network. For an extra $5 a month, users will also be able to access short 3-5 minute clips of HBO programming like The Sopranos.
SmartVideo: Free Music Videos for Mobiles
SmartVideo Technologies has announced the launch Digital Music Video Network, a 24/7 music video channel designed specifically for Internet-enabled mobile devices. The service is available for free to compatible devices anywhere in North America and currently features top 40 music videos, with plans to expand with additional “phone channels” featuring other genres, including dance, urban, hip-hop, country, rock, and more.
The service is available for free because the music video channel is advertiser-supported: that’s right, while you’re using precious mobile data allowances to download the latest from U2, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, or others, you’re also be paying to download advertisements from network sponsors.
Weather A Factor in Weather Channel Games
The Weather Channel and game developer Skyworks Technologies yesterday announced they’d teamed to bring interactive games to viewers of weather.com. These games will incorporate real time weather data from The Weather Channel to allow visitors to experience live conditions as they play.
The Weather Channel Golf Game will have players step up to the tee on a par 3 and attempt to hit a hole-in-one. The shots they take in the game will be impacted by the current or forecast weather for any golf course in the United States.
Email and Weather Top Mobile Phone Sites
What are the top categories and websites visited by cell phone users you might ask? A mobile research company named Telephia has the answers to this in a newly published report showing the most popular places web surfing mobile phone owners like to visit.
The Mobile Internet Report, Telephia said, revealed that in June of 2005 4.8 percent of 191 million Americans using cell phones accessed email related websites. This was followed by weather sites with 3.9 percent, search sites with 2.9 percent, sports with 2.5 percent and news/politics rounding out the top five with 2.1 percent.
Court TV on Your Cell Phone
Court TV and SmartVideo are bringing four different channels of content to a new subscriber-based service available on cell phones. Viewers will have a choice of Court TV News, Video-On-Demand from their primetime programming, and online content including trial coverage.
