Sharper Image Files for Bankruptcy

Upscale gizmo retailer The Sharper Image has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection blaming three straight years of losses on declining sales and problems stemming from its much-derided Ionic Breeze air purifiers.

According to court papers, the chain has been facing declining sales since 2004, and has posted losses during the last three fiscal years. As of January 31, the company claimed to have $251 million in assets and $1999 million in debt, with about $700,000 in cash on-hand. The company is seeking a $60 million loan arranged by Wells Fargo to keep operating.

Anti-phishing group PhishTank, which is a service of openDNS and tracks phishing attempts on the Internet, offers information about phishing and ongoing scams, and offers an open API to developers looking to build phishing protection into applications, has released its phishing statistics for October 2006. Overall, the PhishTank community noted more than 7,000 suspected phishing attempts, of which almost 3,700 were verified and just under 900 were confirmed as invalid—most of the remaining sites went offline before community members could vote.

New IBM Podcast Covers Genographic Project

IBM has a new podcast up which might interest those who are into DNA. Called “IBM and the Future of our Past”, it is part of a new series of IBM podcasts called “IBM and the Future of…”, which focuses on both general technology trends and IBM contributions in a variety of businessand technology areas.   "IBM and the Future of our Past" introduces the Genographic Project, a landmark five-year study conducted by IBM and the National Geographic Society. The Genographic Project is collectinghundreds of thousands of DNA samples to put together a map of how humans migrated out of Africa and populated the planet. The podcast is hosted by Ben Edwards and features a discussion betweenworld-renowned geneticist and anthropologist Dr. Spencer Wells, who heads the Genographic Project, and Ajay Royyuru, head of IBM’s Computational Biology Center.   The podcast is approximately 16 minutes and length and 7.5MB in size.

HDTV DivX Player In The Works

KiSS Technology, Inc. today announced that they will work with DivXNetworks, Inc., to develop a DivX Certified DVD Player optimized for the high-resolution HDTV playback of DivX video files. KiSS Technologies will demonstrate DivX Certified DVD players to major retailers at RetailVision North America, where DivXNetworks is an event sponsor. RetailVision is held April 26-29 at the Hyatt Grand Champion in Indian Wells, California.

IBM Asks Court To Throw Out SCO Claims

The request came in an amended counterclaim filed last week striking back at SCO claims that IBM gave proprietary Unix code to Linux developers.

Twice in a 47-page filing IBM asked federal magistrate Brooke Wells to issue a declaratory judgment absolving it of SCO accusations and calling off a trial set for April 11, 2005.

Nvidia reaches ‘tentative’ deal with SEC

Nvidia has reached a broad agreement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that in return for agreeing to be a good boy in future, the stocks and shares regulator will not fine the company this time.

The agreement, revealed in Nvidia’s annual report, filed with the SEC on Friday, was tabled earlier this month. It is not a formal arrangement, and negotiations to finalise its terms could take weeks or months, Nvidia warned. Even then, the SEC may decide that it wants to take “enforcement action” after all.
