Tales From IFA: The European CES

This week I’m at IFA, which is the European equivalent of CES. It is just getting off the ground as I’m writing this, and we’ve already had the first set of product announcements. Sony is making a rather large and impressive statement at this show, and it intends to lead again in TVs, eBooks, and even has a potential Macbook Air product coming. But I saw a number of other cool things at the Showstoppers event the first night, and at the press briefings, and we’ll talk about them this week.

Vuzix Goes Widescreen with iWear AV310

It’s undoubtedly a great thing to carry around a portion of your video library on an iPod or a similar device…but if there’s one thing the whole “portable digital video” thing is lacking it’s the widescreen experience. For folks who can’t bear to be anything but totally immersed—and really don’t care what they might look like while immersed—Vuzix has announces a new entry in its line of personal video displays for iPods and other portable media players, the iWear AV310. And it fully supports 16:9 widescreen video.

The Best Products of 2006

Each year brings its fair share of bozos and its stars. Those that brought out the bozos (or bought them) know it and we don’t want to rub salt in their wounds during the holiday season (well do that right before CES instead). This week we’ll chat about the products that stood out in our minds as ground breaking and spectacular in a number of categories.

Lenovo Goes Wide with T60 Notebook

Computer maker Lenovo today announced an update to its popular T60 line of business notebook computers, adding new 15.4-inch screen sizes at WXGA resolution (1,366 by 768 pixels) or an eyeball-popping WSXGA+ resolution of 1,680 by 1,050 pixels.

“As the widescreen PC’s popularity spills over from the consumer market to business customers, the new ThinkPad T60 widescreen is giving users more choices,” said Sam Dusi, executive director for marketing, Lenovo Notebook Business Unit, in a statement. “The new notebook gives business users the functions they need, like multiple connectivity options and strong graphics capabilities in a thin and light widescreen form.”

BenQ Brings Out Its 24-inch HDMI LCD

BenQ Brings Out Its 24-inch HDMI LCD

Although was announced for Asian and European markets in mid-2006, electronics maker BenQ is bringing its 24-inch FP241W widescreen LCD monitor to North American consumers through Ingram Micro this month—and high-resolution widescreen display offers features, specs, and a price tag that should attract some interest.

The FP241W offers a 24-inch WUXGA (1,920 by 1,200 pixel) resolution, meaning it’s ready to support high-definition video all the way up to 1080p—and an HDMI input with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for viewing copy-protected digital media. The unit also sports a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a grey-to-grey 6 ms response time, 178° viewing angle, and BenQ’s Pivot Pro software, so the monitor can be used in widescreen or portrait modes (or flipped on the fly). In addition to HDMI input, the FP214W accepts component, composite, S-video, DVI-D, and D-sub input; three USB ports (two on the right, one up top) enable easy connection of peripheral devices.

IDC Says Screens Will Be Brighter and Wider

IDC has releasd a new technology forecast, Worldwide Portables by Screen Size 2004-2009 Forecast and Analysis: The Future is Bright and Wide, in which it notes the popularity of widescreen LCD displays in portable computers and devices has skyrocketed, so much so that it anticipates widescreen displays will be present in the majority of notebook computers shipped in 2006, outstripping screens with (formerly?) standard aspect ratios.
