Best Software for Netbooks

Netbook

Netbooks make fine travel machines for surfing, typing and watching videos, but as most new owners eventually discover, things start to get a little slow when you push too far beyond the basics. After all, 1.6GHz and 1GB of RAM can only take you so far. But you needn’t resign yourself to typing in Notepad and playing Minesweeper whenever you leave the big guns at home in favor of a netbook. We’ve rounded up some of the best lightweight software from across every category that will turn your netbook into a an all-around gaming, multimedia and productivity machine without slowing it to a crawl in the process. And the best part is, almost all of them are free.

New Winamp Player Emerges

Gone are the days of the lean and agile Winamp player, now that AOL has taken the helm. The new version of Winamp will offer users a media library, music and video playback, skins, SHOUT radio and TV and integrated online services (AOL content?) and more.

With more than 57 million monthly unique users, there is no doubt that Winamp is a force to be reckoned with, and a great tool for AOL to take advantage of. But when is a media player more than a media player? When it features the new Winamp Dashboard. Now users can pick and choose from a variety of widgets so they can add personalized news feeds, and track top tracks and albums, artist’s information, viral videos and news and events. And because AOL is now running this jalopy, you can also add feeds from Netflix, Rollingstone.com, Digg Nation, Slashdot, AOL Music Now, Game Daily and other AOL sites and partners.

Another new feature is Winamp Remote which allows users to turn their broadband-connected PC into their own personal media server allowing access to their music collection from any internet-connected computer. Of course AOL has added their own incentive to the mix by letting users share listening and viewing experiences with their friends (viral aspect here). Plans to add access to the Winamp library via a mobile phone is still currently in the works, the company reported.

Additionally, Winamp users will notice more portable media player support including iPods, direct-from-device playback for Plays-for-Sure devices, the ability to convert unsupported file types to a file type that the user’s device can play, more auto-sync options, increased speeds for CD ripping and more superior sound from encoding in AAC and aacPlus.

AOL Updates Winamp After DRM Commotion

“”Immediately upon discovering this flaw, we worked quickly to address it and to ensure that Winamp can continue to provide secure playback of Windows Media content,” an AOL spokesperson toldBetaNews. “A fix is being implemented in existing players and a new player will be posted for users to download.”

Because AOL revoked its Windows Media license currently in use, the updated Winamp will be mandatory for those wishing to play WMA files. “

Engadget released a story a week ago explaining how to bypass Napster’s (and other music services) DRM protection by using a plugin for Winamp that allowed you to record whatever was being played. The story hit every news outlet including Reuters.

Users Bypass Copy Protection On Napster

Using a plugin called Output Stacker for Winamp, you can actually record whatever is being played through your soundcard, whether its Napster, an internet radio stream or RealNetwork’s Rhapsody. The recording is saved in a .WAV file which you can burn to CD and then re-rip back to your computer. The .WAV recording has to be done in real time though, and the album information will not be present. This has been common knowledge to most Winamp users for some time. Unfortunately Napster has been target in the press.

NullSoft, Winamp Call It Quits

“Winamp’s abandonment comes as no surprise to those close to the company who say the software has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and Winamp creator Justin Frankel last January.

The marriage of Nullsoft and AOL was always one of discontent. After AOL acquired the small company in 1999 for around $100 million, the young team of Winamp developers was assimilated into a strict corporate culture that begged for rebellion. Although Nullsoft was initially given a long leash by AOL, It wasn’t long until the two ideologies collided.”

Latest Version Of Winamp Released

Winamp skips a version number, going straight from 3 to 5 with their latest digital media player software.

Fans weren’t too impressed with version 3 so Winamp decided to skip a version and start over.

The new player can be found at Winamp’s Website.
