Consider this: It probably won’t matter whether you upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 or you don’t, so save some money and do the latter – or at least that’s what some top mobile experts are saying. Other tech experts are urging consumers to remember that if you’re looking for a low cost smartphone with an updated operating system (OS), then maybe you should try a new Windows Mobile 6.5 phone instead. Windows Mobile 6.5 and Choosing a Smartphone
This week in New York, Microsoft released Windows Mobile 6.5, and I got three early mobile handset prototypes that utilize the operating system to play with for several weeks. I’m not a huge fan of the iPhone because I don’t like touchscreen models, and wouldn’t you know it, all three of the phones Microsoft sent are just that, including two from HTC and one from Toshiba. It is interesting to note that while I like the Toshiba best, I really don’t like having to do without a keyboard, and the current market trend towards touchscreen setups is starting to really piss me off. While I’m using Windows Mobile 6.5 release as the trigger, much of this is going to look at how you should choose a phone and why I think viable alternatives to the iPhone do, in fact, exist.
Microsoft Places its Smartphone Bet on Windows Mobile 6.5
Software giant Microsoft has formally launched Windows Mobile 6.5, the latest version of its mobile operating system that it hopes will be able to compete with offerings from the likes of Palm, RIM, Google, Nokia, and Apple. And while Microsoft also showcased Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets—now dubbed Windows phones—from makers like HTC and Samsung, Microsoft made clear that part of the appeal of Windows Mobile is that the platform will offer a wide range of device options form a number of carriers, rather than locking consumers into a handful of devices from a restricted list of operators.
Microsoft: Windows Mobile 6.5 Phones Coming October 6
Microsoft might be the dominant player in the market for computer operating systems, but the company hasn’t fared so well in the world of mobile phones—especially considering the most popular smartphones on the market are from Apple and RIM, and none of them run Windows Mobile. Now Redmond is looking to try to re-assert its authority in the smartphone space…and it’s starting with an oddly wishy-washy press release promising a new generation of smartphones bearing Windows Mobile 6.5 will launch from mobile operators and phone makers worldwide on October 6.
