Yesterday was the first official test of the complex technology needed to provide a wireless Internet connection aboard a moving vessel. At issue is whether it is feasible to offer connectivity to more of the system’s 24.5 million annual passengers.
Apparently, it is.
A signal was detectable yesterday immediately upon booting up a Wi-Fi-capable laptop aboard the Klickitat. Getting online required installing no software or setup — just typing a user name and a password into the screen that appeared on the browser.
Using Internet-based e-mail was indistinguishable from similar surfing on dry land, as was perusing Amazon.com and eBay.
