Blackberry, HTC and Sprint Target Apple iPhone

The iPhone is finally patched, or at least we think so, possibly, we’re pretty sure… OK, we wouldn’t bet our lives on it. The 3G iPhone, surrounded by complaints and lawsuits, was hardly Apple’s best effort. But even so, it remains one of the most popular phone products ever created. It amazes me that the phone manufacturers weren’t able to come up with truly competitive products. That is until now.

Of course, if we actually ask a numbers firm, we find out that the iPhone (despite all the hype) is still a niche player.

Home Networks Take Over

Home Networks Take Over

A new survey from ABI Research shows that over half of the broadband-equipped households in the US employ some kind of home network, making it a mainstream adoption now. More people are using laptops, game consoles, and Wi-Fi equipped cell phones at home.

"Our research shows that more than a quarter of home network owners have a games console on their home network, while another eight per cent have connected their mobile phone," said ABI Research director Mike Wolf.

And people appear to be interested in ways to use their networks beyond connecting online.

Consumers Prefer Movie Rentals to Downloads

YouTube and other sites may be establishing the popularity of short Internet video clips, but when it comes to full-length movies, even video-savvy Internet users till prefer traditional TV and video rental offerings, according to ABI Research.

The new survey, “Broadband Video and Web Television End User Perceptions,” polled 1,725 online consumers age 18 and over via the Web during October 2006. The survey found that while as many as 7 in 10 online video users watch short clips such as excerpts from sporting events or news shows, movie downloads remain the least watched genre of online video, with just one in twenty online video users having rented or purchased a movie for download. More users indicated they’d downloaded a movie fro a peer-to-peer file sharing service, but even with those additions, movies remain the least watched form of online video on the Internet.

State Dept. To Quarantine 16,000 Lenovos

In response to criticism from representative Frank Wolf (R-VA), the U.S. State Department has decided that some 16,000 laptop computers it purchased from Lenovo will not be used for classified work or connected to classfied networks within the State Department. Reportedly, 900 of the 16,000 systems were slated to be used in classified contexts.

Congressman Wolf criticized the purchase as a potential threat to U.S. national security. His rationale? About 28 percent of Lenovo is owned by a Chinese government agency, and Lenovo systems are manufactured in China. The rest of Lenovo is owned by IBM (13 percent) and other worldwide investors. Using the Lenovo systems for classified work, Wolf argued, could potentially give the Chinese government access to classified U.S. information.

Home Networking To Grow Exponentially

From In-Stat/MDR’s press release:

Home networking entered the mainstream in 2003 and early 2004, as large numbers of broadband users installed home networks to share Internet connections and electronics vendors delivered new products to send high-value entertainment content over the network. According to In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com/), the continued need for broadband sharing and a growing interest in entertainment networking will drive the total value of equipment with a home networking connection of some type from $8.3 billion in 2004 to $17.1 billion by 2008.

Motorola camera phones miss holiday season

Reports of the delays, which initially sent Motorola shares down more than 5 percent on Friday, come on the heels of the surprise resignation last week of Motorola’s chairman and chief executive, Christopher Galvin, amid differences with the board.

Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc  , said Friday it had been expecting the V810, with built-in digital camera, from Motorola for the crucial fourth quarter. However, it will not be ready until the first quarter now.

“They just don’t have a camera phone to sell during the fourth quarter,” Verizon Wireless spokesman Jim Gerace said.
