New Sony DVD Burner Gets 8X DVD+R DL

Sony announced Monday the availability of a new DVD burner geared towards Mac users. The new DRX-820UL/T is priced at $159.99 and available now.

The DRX-820UL/T, said Sony, has a vertical design and is equipped with both i.LINK (IEEE1394/FireWire compatible) and USB 2.0 interfaces. It comes bundled with burning software for both Mac and Windows operating systems. It also reportedly supports the industry’s fastest 8X DVD+R Double Layer (DL) recording speed, allowing users to record up to four hours of MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5 GB of data, music and/or images on compatible media in about fifteen minutes.

Plextor Delivers 18x DVD+/-R Burner

Plextor today said they were planning to ship shortly the industry’s first 18x DVD+/-R burner. The new PX-760A is priced at $119 and should be available in April.

The multifunction internal PX-760A, Plextor said, offers up versatile DVD/CD burning capabilities which reportedly get recording speeds of 18X DVD+/-R on certified 16X DVD+/-R media, 10X DVD+R on Double-Layer media and 6X DVD-R on Dual Layer media. The drive also supports 8X DVD+RW and 6X DVD-RW rewriting; 16X max DVD-reading; and 48X CD-R writing, 24X CD-RW rewriting and 48X max CD-reading.

Sony today announced details about the forth coming DRX-810UL/T external DVD burner. This unit, which is Mac and PC compatible, will be available in November for less than $150.

The DRX-810UL/T, said Sony, works with both PCs and Macs. It comes bundled with both Toast 6 Lite (Mac) and Nero (PC) software for storing and sharing of home movies, digital photos, and music at 8X maximum for DVD+R Double Layer recording speed, enabling users to burn up to 8.5GB of video, data, music or images on compatible media in about fifteen minutes.

Sony Goes 8x on New DVD Burners

Sony yesterday announced they were planning on introducing their tenth generation DVD burners this fall. The internal DRU-810A will be available in September for around $100, while the external DRX-810UL will been seen on store shelves in October for around $150.

This 810 series, Sony said, will feature an 8x DVD+R recording speed for dual layer DVDs, which means it can burn up to 8.5GB of data on compatible media within about 15 minutes. They also features 4X DVD-R DL, 16X DVD+/-R, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW, 48X CD-R and 32X CD-RW recording.

Samsung Bundles NeroLinux With DVD Writers

Samsung will be the first to bundle NeroLINUX with a DVD/CD burner, its TS-H552U WriteMaster. The bundle will be available as a retail kit.

The versatile Samsung TS-H552U WriteMaster drive supports 16X DVD+R, 16X DVD-R, 5X DVD+R DL, 4X DVD+/-RW, 40X CD-R and 32X US-RW.

NeroLINUX supports CD/DVD burning data and disc images, Bootable CDs and DVDs, Audio CDs with CD text, Mixed Mode CDs, CD-EXTRA, and Multisession.

The Plextor PX-740A Series drive is a highly versatile 10-in-1 DVD/CD burner that supports 8X DVD+R DL, 4X DVD-R DL, and 16X DVD+/-R Writing; 8X DVD+RW and 6X DVD-RW Rewriting; and 16X max DVD-Reading; as well as high-speed 48X CD-R Writing, 32X CD-RW Rewriting, and 48X max CD-Reading.

The PX-740A drive has a 2 MB buffer and features Buffer Underrun Proof Technology to prevent buffer underrun errors and allow multi-tasking. Lossless Linking/Zero Link technology enables users to perform basic editing tasks directly on the DVD disc.

Speed Up Your Plextor Drive With Update

The firmware upgrade will be available in two releases. Release 1.04 is available today on Plextor’s website http://www.plextor.com. This firmware supports 2X DVD-R DL and 6X DVD+R DL on 8.5 GB DVD DL media, along with 8X DVD+RW and 16X DVD+/-R on recommended single-layer DVD media with Plextor’s AUTOSTRATEGY(R) recording optimization feature. Release 1.05, available March 31, 2005, supports 6X DVD-R on DL DVD media.

“This firmware upgrade demonstrates Plextor’s unwavering commitment to protecting the investments of our customers,” said Howard Wing, vice president of sales and marketing for Plextor. “Customers now can upgrade their PX-716 Series drive and enjoy the greater productivity that comes with faster recording speeds.”

DVD Camcorders Stick With Current Formats

In addition, the RDVDC announced that market research conducted by TSR show that DVD camcorders are one of the fastest growing segments of the entire recordable DVD market, and that sales of consumer DVD recorders, writers (PC drives/burners) and camcorders have more than doubled in size over the past year. 

Plextor Introduces 16X SATA DVD Writer

The drive achieves blazing fast 16X CAV performance on recommended 8X DVD+R media, and burns a 4.7GB DVD in less than six minutes, one minute faster than leading ZCLV competitors. The new drive also supports dual-layer DVD media, enabling users to burn up to four hours of high-quality MPEG-2 video on a single 8.5GB DVD disc in approximately 28 minutes.

The internal PX-716SA drive features an integrated Serial ATA connection, enabling OEMs and System Integrators to leverage the benefits of SATA, including 150 MB/sec bandwidth, elimination of master/slave configuration jumper issues, a substantial pin count reduction, and thinner cables to help air-flow and improve cable routing.

New Sony DVD Burners Boost Speed To 16x

Sony Electronics is upping the ante for DVD recording with its second generation of DVD+R Double Layer (DL) burners that support 16X DVD+R recording.

Burning a full write-once single layer disc in approximately six minutes, the Sony internal DRU-710A and external DRX-710UL drives make great options for consumers interested in high-speed burning and substantial storage capacity at an attractive price.

The 710 series marks Sony’s seventh generation of Dual RW drives, and can also support 16X DVD+R, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD±RW, 48X CD-R and 24X CD-RW recording speeds.
