Sony’s 2008 Loss? A Cool One Billion Dollars

Sony

Yesterday Sony announced its financials for the year ending in March, and for the first time in 14 years, it made a loss. But what a loss! It’s a round $1 billion.

That’s bad enough, but the company has said it expects to lose even more in the coming year.

Sony blamed reduced demand for electronics goods and a strong yen for sales slumping by 12.9%. The losses were $1.05 billion, which was actually less than initially forecast, thanks to a change in Japanese tax laws and no real decline in TV prices. Sales were down in every area, with only the Bravia LCD TVs showing an increase.

Seattle Ferries To Have WiFi Access

Seattle Ferries To Have WiFi Access

Yesterday was the first official test of the complex technology needed to provide a wireless Internet connection aboard a moving vessel. At issue is whether it is feasible to offer connectivity to more of the system’s 24.5 million annual passengers.

Apparently, it is.

A signal was detectable yesterday immediately upon booting up a Wi-Fi-capable laptop aboard the Klickitat. Getting online required installing no software or setup — just typing a user name and a password into the screen that appeared on the browser.

Using Internet-based e-mail was indistinguishable from similar surfing on dry land, as was perusing Amazon.com and eBay.

Universal broadband adoption likely

“Yesterday’s release of the final rules to deregulate last mile broadband facilities is a giant leap toward making universal adoption of broadband a reality. While we still need to review the final rule, we are hopeful that it will contain the CEA supported High Tech Broadband Coalition’s proposal removing outmoded regulations that were stifling investment in last-mile broadband infrastructure.

“We thank the Commission for its tireless efforts to advance competition in the broadband marketplace, providing limitless benefits to consumers and a much-needed boost to the economy.”
