Could Your Mobile Be A Mouse?

You won’t be using it anytime soon, but researchers at a pair of British universities have created software that allows a cameraphone to function as a computer mouse, according to a report on Vnunet.   Teams working together at York and Newcastle universities have created the software that uses Bluetooth technology. By moving the phone as you would a mouse, it could interact with public displays, letting users perform such tasks as obtain product information or buy tickets. It works using the camera and a Bluetooth connection.   However, it’s still a long way from any commercial release.   "The image capture and image processing rate on the mobile phone is quite slow and you cannot move the phone as quickly as you would like to. This is what we would like to address in our next prototype," said Nick Pears, one of the researchers at York University.

YouTube Hit With Another Suit

YouTube has found itself the recipient of yet another lawsuit. As if it wasn’t bad enough that Viacom, the English Premier Football League and Paramount Pictures are all suing the video-sharing site, now the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) has joined the fray.   The NMPA claims that a number of songwriters aren’t receiving proper compensation whenever their music appears on the site. They’ve joined with several other companies, including Viacom and Nickelodeon, in a combined case that will be heard in New York.   YouTube asserts that it complies with the law by immediately removing any clip that they find in breach of copyright.   David Israelite, chief executive of the NMPA, said that the body had great concerns about YouTube’s approach to copyright.   He stated that the body was joining the combined suit “to protect the interests of music publishers and songwriters, whose creative works are being used without permission or compensation by YouTube.”   The case is pending before the Honorable Louis L. Stanton in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Spammer Settles with Microsoft for $7 Mln

Microsoft Corporation announced today it has reached a settlement with former self-proclaimed "spam king" Scott Richter and his Colorado company OptInRealBig, LLC, for some $7 million. The settlement is contingent on bankruptcy proceedings against the company being dismissed by a Denver court, but Microsoft says, after recovering its expenses from the case, it plans to re-invest all money from the settlement, including putting $5 million towards enhancing technical investigative support for law enforcement and $1 million to the state of New York, which also sued Richter in December, 2003.

Intermix Media Inc. which calls themselves a web marketer will be paying the state of New York $7.5 million dollars over the course of three years to settle accusations that the company installs spyware on user’s computer systems.

As part of the new agreement, Intermix Media will also stop any ad-related downloads from being distributed, although the company says they have voluntarily stopped distributing their adware products and programs to users.

Although Intermix Media has settled on terms, they have not admitted any public wrongdoing. For those unfamiliar with Intermix Media, they own several websites that feature online games, jokes, quizzes and other entertainment products. Believe it or not, Intermix Media is a publicly traded company which you can own a part of.
