Although Motorola rode a two-year high-profile success with its sleek RAZR phone, the company has dropped to third place among mobile phone makers, and turned in doleful financials for the first half of 2007—and although the third quarter wasn’t to bad, it still represented a 94 percent drop in profits. Today, however, Motorola’s stock buoyed up a bit: CEO Ed Zander announced he would be stepping down January 1, to be replaced by current Chief Operating Office Greg Brown. Zander will continue in his role as chairman of the company’s board until at least the company’s annual shareholder meeting in May 2008, and as an advisor to the CEO through January 5, 2009..

Motorola Rolls Out New Mobile Devices
At an event in New York City today, Motorola took the wraps off its new collection of mobile devices, including a new version of its highly successful RAZR phone, a new version of its ROKR music phone, an updated version of its Windows Mobile-based Q smartphone, and a new self-proclaimed "media monster," the Moto Z8 phone.
"This focused new product portfolio further advances Motorola’s goal of bringing the ultimate mobile experience to customers around the globe," said Ed Zander, Motorola’s chairman and CEO. "Built on a cutting-edge technology platform, these devices feature powerful multimedia, messaging and innovative business capabilities. With this exciting product line-up, Motorola is once again redefining the cell phone for the world’s evolving mobile community."
Motorola Planning Movie-Capable Phone
Speaking at the Software 2007 conference in Silicon Valley, Motorola CEO Ed Zander revealed that his company plans to unveil a new mobile phone capable of playing back full-motion, full-length motion pictures stored on SD cards. Zander described the phone as a “media monster,” and said the company plans to show the product next week.
Motorola CEO Hints at Apple SmartPhone
News.com is reporting that Motorola CEO Ed Zander threw out the idea that Apple could be introducing a smart phone sometime in the near future. The remark was made yesterday at a Technology Review conference. Zander was quoted sometime last week as attacking the Apple iPod nano saying "Screw the nano. What the hell does the nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs?” Although Zander claims he was taken out of context, the media has taken advantage of the situation speculating that there might be a rift between Motorola and Apple (the two companies have a long history of working together). Zander told the press that they have a great relationship with Motorola, and added that he knows Apple will be” building a smart phone, it is only a matter of time.” You can read the full News.com story here. The new Motorola ROKR phone has received bad reviews and press since its inception due to its limited storage capabilities and bland design. Has Apple held out in an effort to introduce their own smart phone which will showcase the companies design ingenuity? If so, that would be a major insult to Motorola who has no doubt invested heavily into creating an iTunes mobile phone.
Motorola To Expand RAZR Phone Line
“Since the Razr V3 hit store shelves in November, Motorola has shipped an estimated 750,000 of the $500 phones — three times more than Zander initially expected. And BusinessWeek has learned that the company is hard at work on a whole family of Razr-like phones in various shapes and colors — including the Sliver, a candy-bar-shaped Razr — to be announced later this year. “
