Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Review

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any innovation in the PDA scene, especially since Sony stopped selling their Clie line. With the PDA market seemingly shrinking and stagnating, Sharp has released a new versatile PDA that may change what the definition of a PDA is.

The Zaurus SL-C3000 is the latest in the line of Linux-based PDAs from Sharp. What distinguishes the Zaurus from other popular PDAs is the use of Linux as the core operating system. This allows the Zaurus to have a stable, tried and true operating system with a lot of flexibility and extensibility. In addition, Sharp packs the Zaurus SL-C3000 with the best of technologies to create a very unique product.

New Sharp Zaurus Available In North America

Starting today, Amazon.com is selling the Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 in North America for $699. The Linux powered handheld can be used as a laptop replacement and features a 400MHz Intel processor, 64MB of protected flash memory and SDRAM, a 640 x 480 display and a Compact Flash and SD expansion slot.

From Sharp’s product description and November press release:

Sharp Zaurus PDA To Include New Opera 7

The SL-6000 is the first embedded device to feature the new Opera 7 browser for embedded devices. Opera was included in the SL-6000’s predecessor, the SL-5500.

“The combination of the new Zaurus SL-6000 and the latest version of Opera is a mobile professional’s dream come true. Geared for corporate users, the SL-6000 was designed from the ground up to be a powerful and flexible personal mobile tool enabling mobile corporate customers to seamlessly connect to critical enterprise data no matter where they are,” said Steve Petix, associate vice president of Sharp’s Solutions Division. “Its extensive expandability as well as embedded Wi-Fi capabilities, large VGA screen and easy-to-use keyboard make it an ideal business tool. The Opera browser represents class-leading capabilities for a seamless online experience when working remotely.”
