Audio gear maker Zoom (owned by Samson Technologies) has long been known for its high quality portable audio gear, favored by everyone from journalists to podcasters to audio professionals for field recordings, interviews, and other on-the-go work. Now the company is looking to improve on its well-received H4n Handy Recorder with the Q3 Handy Video Recorder, which puts professional-quality stereo audio recording in a compact gizmo that can also capture VGA video—and the whole thing runs off AA batteries and stores data to SD/SDHC media.

Kodak Expands Easyshare Camera Line
At this year’s PMA show, Kodak has announced four new additions to its Easyshare lineup of consumer-oriented digital cameras, including two mid-range shooters with high ISO sensitivity, big optical zooms, and image stabilization, and two budget-friend entry-level cameras.
First up, the Easyshare Z712 IS Zoom Digital Camera goes after serious amateurs and aspiring photographers who may not want to go all the way to DSLRs. The Z712 offers a 7.1 megapixel resolution, 12× optical zoom lens (36–432mm equivalent), and optical image stabilization. Kodak says the Z712 offers “best in class” click-to-capture performance of just 0.26 seconds, and the camera sports ISO sensitivity up to 1,600 (3,200 if you’re willing to drop to 1.2 megapixels). The Z712 sports a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder, 32 MB of internal memory (and stores images to SD/MMC cards), and can capture VGA-resolution video at 30 frames per second. The Z712 should be available in April at a suggested price of $299.95.
Faulty Sony CCDs Fail in Dozens of Cameras?
In the last few weeks, digital camera makers Sony, Konica Minolta, Nikon (Europe and Japan), Olympus (Japanese only), Canon, Fujifilm, and Ricoh have all issued service advisories covering several of their camera models, citing the cameras’ sudden failure to record images, or to snap distorted pictures or images with a strong purple cast. The failures effectively render the cameras useless. In classic “stealth recall” move, most companies are typically offering to repair the defective cameras free of charge regardless of warranty status, but are coy about admitting to the problem, presumably because the extent of the failures may show the company or their products in a bad light.
