Here is the cure for the "ailing" music industry: Drop production of CDs NOW and make them ALL hybrid SACD, ala The Stones Let It Bleed. Then all the people whose idea of high fidelity comes from Best Buy or Walmart can play the freakin things. Now drop the MSRP to $9.99 (say about $8 discounted) and sit back and watch them FLY OFF THE SHELVES!!! People want their own disks of their favorite artists with all the neat artwook and booklets. Then the true audiophiles like you and me will have their cake and eat it too.

The bigger problem with SACD and DVD-Audio is less about content and more about adoption ... by the consumer.

The Compact Disc is largely ingrained in the minds of consumers and is ubiquitous; it has become a defacto standard well beyond what vinyl had achieved, so much so that people are hesitant to change. This is particularly true if the price to upgrade is considerably high.

More succinctly, the Compact Disc works well, so why change?

This is what the consumer thinks. Most won't jump on the latest bandwagon just because it's new. Consumers, rather, want to get the most value for the money they spend. They'd rather not spend more money to upgrade to something that most people may not hear a discernible difference in quality, unlike CD versus LP and tape.

It seems that for most people it's about what they see rather than hear. HDTV has no problem taking off; SACD and DVD-Audio are stuck in the mudd. If you ask me, you can't have one wihtout the other...they should be fueling each other {hi-res this, hi-res that}.
