It's not a "death" as much as a convergence. You'll find that both Nikon and Canon have DSLRs that shoot video and the majority of point and shoot cameras are actually video cameras as well now. On the professional side, the company "Red" which makes high definition video cameras for cinematic use, sells a camera which can be used either way. For the forseeable future, it will generally be possible to create a higher quality still image explicitly, versus simply flagging a frame or two as a 'photo.' However, that difference may not matter to the majority of consumers at some point and cameras may shoot constant video with timeline flags as to where the intended 'click' was. Then again, what do I know, I don't even think film is completely obsolete yet.

Rob,

Shocking possibility, especially for one with Kodak heritage. I might buy the obsolescence of the point-and-shoot, in favor of a Flip-like device with better optics and SW. However, it is difficult to imagine my Nikon DSLR (importantly, with advanced lighting/flash management capability) being undone by the same. At the least, the flash assisted scenarios seem to require single image capture. I'm not an expert on image specs, but the richness from the DSLR is far beyond the (good) point-and-shoots we have, and presumably the Flip is still inferior to P&S. But with unlimited data capture, enhancement, and speedy processing, maybe...

Rob, thanks for the great column. I like your thinking on all fronts. I share many of your thoughts about Flip; however, I am most interested in the impact on businesses: http://www.prolifiq.net/blogs/prolifiq/
