No phone out there can set on its homescreen a personally created "button" to "text 'friend 1'" and a "button" to "call 'friend 2' and a "button" to "IM 'friend 3'" (and any combination thereof) like the Google OS phones (there are now several manufacturers ready to launch, not just the T-Mobile G1 from HTC). This is one simple illustration of the poise Google has on the market as so eloquently stated by someone as vision and network breadth. T-Mobile has done some pretty weak stuff but they showed savvy by partnering with Google before anyone else. There isn't a true geek out there that doesn't wonder if he/she will be the next genius lauded with praise for having created the "iPhone killer application" that changes the world and the software development kit is free for anyone to download...

Kontra

the ipod is sold in nearly every electronics shop on the high street aswell as on the internet.

the iphone is sold in O2 shops (in the UK), thus making your comparison to ipod sales invalid.
Remember though, google doesn't make the phone. They make the OS, right? So whoever comes up with a good way of utilizing the Google mobile os and has a great form factor has a possible winner.

All the crap Apple's been getting from the developers that make the iPhone apps is starting to snowball it seems. The last thing you want to do is piss of your devs. If RIM's new Bold has a good developer api, it's possible you could see another small explosion of user growth.

However, the iPhone targets the *cool* kids while RIM and all the other smartphones target business users, at least what it seems to me.

"Windows Mobile has to be dying a slow death. I don't know anyone who uses them anymore."

So are you a market researcher who's conducted a survey into this, or just judging based on a small group of acquaintances?

I have a Motorola Q9m and it's a pretty great phone. Go to a site like everythingq.com and check the forums to see how many people use that one line of Windows Mobile devices. Maybe it will open your eyes a bit.

Why not compare to a Palm OS Centro? The Centro does 90+ percent of what these do, and more than some (*cough* iPhone *cough*) at half the price or less.

there are many varieties of phone preferences; mac owners and ipod fanatics swear by the iphone, god bless, despite its many problems; some prefer small shirt pocket phones weighing 70-80 grams; some prefer a lower-half keyboard like blackberry and nokia e71, operable with one hand

what I want to see is a phone meeting all three requirements - a full frontal, touch sensitive screen that slides up to reveal a qwerty keyboard, in other words, a blackberry/nokia e71 split into two sliding halves, running an os with nice user interface; I dont think this is far off - just a question of who gets there first and how much it would cost

Kontra, Apple does not rule the MP3 market. The iPod might be the best selling mp3 player, (though their line is different from their phone line because they offer different choices unlike the iPhone's one model different memory campaign) but Apple does not rule the MP3 market or the music market just like they can't rule the smart phone market with their strategy.

The Tmobile G1 phone is the ugliest phone I have ever seen: http://www.t-mobileg1.com/
