Consumers need lower cost, easier to install/use audio systems for thir LCD TVs. 5.1ch home theaters are great for media rooms, but aren't pratical for smaller rooms. New low cost Soundbars with integrated amps, virtual subwoofer and wide surround will emerge as a hot new product.

In the graf on Toshiba and Hitachi exiting the RPTV category, I should have added Sony to the list. The news came after I'd finished this story.

Mark,

I agree with you regarding the HD sound formats. I am a so called high end consumer, but am frustrated as hell that I am given almost zero choice in buying an updated pre/processor for my home theatre (Yes theatre, I am Australian).

Even Halcro don't appear to have their act together on this. Bring on CES and lets see what the mass consumer mob has to say and do on the matter. Rotel maybe?
