My dad rode with a guy that owns an IZIP and found out the ones that we sell at our store are better. I don't exactly know the details but if you wanna check out some of our e-bikes go to www.EZGreenBikes.com. Prices range from $850-$1200.
Yes, the E+ is quite expensive. The Chinese are producing a wide variety of very cheap alternatives which make it impossible for me to see how anyone could pay this much money. But obviously, you get what you pay for! The Chinese models (under various brand names) are not the highest quality bikes.

Currie Technologies, on the other hand, is an American company producing some of the highest quality electric bikes on the market today. They are manufactured in China (isn't everything?) but they're developed and designed in the U.S. They have a wide range of models and price points, with entry level IZIP models running around $799 - up to $1899 for the higher end models. They also have another lower quality brand, EZIP, which you can find at numerous large department and outlet stores. They start around $499 - but have steel frames and lower quality components than the IZIPs.

Here's a great place to find more electric bike information: http://www.eco-wheelz.com

I disagree with you regarding the Tidalforce. It may be first generation but the price of the battery is much less and length of service is much more than you state. I have over 9300 miles on my bike and I am only on my second A battery and second B battery. I purchased it in July 2004. The replacement cost of each of the batteries is the same as the price of a battery on the E+ web site. Both are NIMH just like E+ is selling.

I love the bike and have had little problems with it since I purchased it. I had the upgrade to 1000 watts done by Wavecrest for free in 2005 and they also upgraded the electrical connections and fixed the problem with cutouts in wet weather for free. I have had no problems with it since they stopped selling the bike a couple of years ago.

I've also test ridden the E+ since I'm in easy distance from their factory near Dulles, VA. I think I was one of the first to test ride. I love the bike and it has some features that are truly improved from the Tidalforce. However, the additional $1000 price over the original price of the Tidalforce makes me balk at buying one of the E+ models.

I've been using the E+ mountain bike for my commute...about 20 miles each way & Love IT! I purchased it in July & it has a fantastic ride, its been reliable, comfortable & convenient.

I'm 47 & had been trying to commute daily via bike but..well, I'm just not the athlete I wish I was. I could do the commute once or twice a week on a conventional bike but beyond that, I'd begin to lose the joy of the ride. With my E+ I meet my cycling goals. I'm keeping my heart rate in the range I want & I'm slowly losing weight, all while enjoying the ride. I didn't want a kit & I needed a bike that could withstand some abuse & still perform.

The sturdy build of the bike, battery & control unit gives me the confidence for such a long commute as I travel over gravel as well as a paved path & I travel in all kinds of weather. I easily transferred all my cycling gear from my conventional bike to the E+, including my BobYak trailer. With the front shocks, shock absorbing seat I've logged about 1600 miles on it. I was willing to pay the extra money for such a well built bike & don't regret higher price tag. I feel I got what I paid for, a superior bike.
You don't nee to spend this kind of money to experience the joys of cycling electric. I have been riding a IZIP electric for more then a year that cost me about $800. They also have a range of product for just about everyone and are the oldest and largest electric bike company in the US. http://www.izipusa.com/
