Maybe Rob just hates Apple so much, he has to bash them everytime he can.

Can't blame the guy. As much as I hate reading his Apple articles, I love seeing the reactions he gets out of Apple lovers.

Looking at Amazon sells...there must be a lot of suckers. The 32GB Touch is #27 in electronics and 7 out of the 8 MP3 players outselling it are also iPods. The Zune 80 is #238 in electronics (and the top selling current Zune).

But the fact remains that Enderle has never been right with his predictions about Microsoft's iPod Killing Strategy(tm). He was wrong about the personal media centers in 2004 (quoted above) and he was wrong about the Zune being able to take advantage of a perceived weakness in Apple's lineup.

OMG The Apple fanboys are here in force!

The touch sucks guys. It's overpriced, and Steve Blow Jobs screwed you by releasing a better version AFTER the got sucked into buying the first.

Sure the interface is cool, but that much money for 8/16GB of storage? Yikes!!

Rip-off

But, I still do not know ANYONE with a Zune. It may be better, but nobody knows.

It's all about marketing. And there, MS loses to Apple (in the consumer space) every day.

I stopped reading after your ridiculous statement that the Zune was comparable to the ipod Touch. Are you kidding me?

The Zune is comparable to the original ipod or the ipod classic. It isn't with two years of the ipod touch. Come on man, your homerism is showing. The only reason the Zune sold at all was because MS slashed the prices.

How do you figure that the Zune has gained marketshare? NPD said that every other DAP manufacturer besides Apple saw a decline in sales for the Christmas quarter.

BTW, remember this?

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/155236_msft...

"Matching up against the $499 iPods, the Portable Media Centers in the $400 to $500 range could do very well, said analyst Rob Enderle. "They could take a pretty good chunk of that market, if not own it," he said.

Enderle said he has seen some of the latest Portable Media Center prototypes, not yet publicly unveiled. The manufacturers appear to have "learned a lot from the initial Apple designs and from some of the Apple pretenders that have come out and not done very well," he said. "I think you're going to be impressed with the industrial designs of these players."
I think Will has done a magnificent job of reflecting on only one part of your report. Seems like you've traveled deeply into darkest Enderle Territory, deeper than you've gone before. We, who lack YOUR COURAGE AND VISION, salute you!

I like this one: "In many ways the 80 GB Zune is competitive with the iPod Touch..."

Competitive w/ the touch? What planet are you from?

Best wishes on your continued journeys.

How has the Zune/ZMP caught up with the iPod/iTMS? The client software has gotten worse, there are still no movie purchases or rentals, no tv shows, no audio books, and no games.

The article also said that the Zune has caught up with the Touch? Zune's WiFi is essentially useless. The Touch's WiFi can be used for the web, mail, maps, stocks, and to buy music. That doesn't even count the third party hacks that are available.

Wow I actually agree with you for a change here regarding Apple Rob. Apple has all the right components in place to make the iPhone series of phones the best selling of all time (if they are not already). And like you said, Microsoft engineers are likely to screw this up. Without a music site as a partner (Urge, MSN Music, Zune Marketplace, Rhapsody - what will it be next year) the new MS phones will add to the confusion rather than fix it.

So MS and Danger could be working on the "Zune phone", but chances are that it will take a couple generations of failure before they pick up steam like the current Zune (which still has tiny marketshare) and even then Apple will be too far ahead.
