You are so wrong...
The gamecube has $99 price and still it dont sell well.
The xbox and the ps2 have the same price before microsoft kill the xbox, and it dont sold better than the ps2, in fact sell less than 1/3, so neither the price or halo help to win the last generation.
The only people that hate the ps3 price are the ones that want one and cant afford pay it.
Sony will sell tens of millions of ps3, like they did with the ps2, just they have 3 successful platforms that they take care and wont canibalize any platform.
Neither nintendo or microsoft have 3 million sellers platforms at this time.
In fact microsoft kill the xbox months before the x360 launch, to forze all xbox fans to convert to x360 since day one, thats why the x360 already have their spike sales, month after month microsoft is selling less x360 that they did the last year, last quarter they sold 700000, same quarter last year they sold 1800000.
You really think that the 120000000 ps2 fans will evaporate, maybe some have already buy the ps3, but the rest will buy it, in 2 or 3 years, some buy their ps2 a year or 2 years ago, they are still getting new releases, good games, full support from sony, they are not rushed from sony to put the ps2 in garbage and buy a ps3 like microsoft did killing the xbox and forzing buying a rushed x360 (all that hadrware problems they have is for rush th x360 without proper quality control, same with vista, but is how they run their company).
You really think that all the 100000000 ps1 fans rush for their ps2, that they but it in the first or second year the ps2 was released, many wait several years.
All sony platforms have more than doubled the console life time that microsoft give to the xbox.
To andyx,

It's easy to assume that Rob has bias when your not thinking for yourself, nor reading everything he writes about. But to look at a picture and base bias when the picture also has a PS3?? C'mon who's more Bias, Rob or you?

To Galley:

Maybe the Wii is a fad, but it sure has a lot of interest and they did hit the textbook price point. And, if you think about it, the Wii duplicates what the iPod did in MP3 players and Palm did in PDAs, it just does what it needs to do well.

It really does have a nice Blu-Ray player, its what I currently use, though I'd likely buy a deck were I just going that route now (easier for my wife to use).

To John B:

Maybe, but the stuff was failing out of warranty. As I said getting some executive to sign off on a $1B+ write off isn't easy, but it probably is the right thing to do regardless. It was just funny that it came at a time when folks were complaining about the iPhone battery replacement fiasco and the AT&T customer support problems. You'd just think, of the two, Apple would treat their customers better than Microsoft would. It just struck me as strange.

To Andyx:

There isn't a good mod yet for the Wii or the PS3 (I think the PS3 looks to good to mod), and I believe I said the Wii appeared to have the advantage so don't follow your logic on bias. (Also, if you look at the picture, that's a PS3 behind the modded Xbox).
Looking at Rob's modded Xbox confirmed my suspicion on where his bias really is.

What does it take to get something like that approved? Well, you can tell from the dollar cost they assigned to the increase and the manufacturing costs of the device that they expect to replace at least a third (maybe more if they cost less to make than we think) of the systems they have shipped to date by the end of the three year period (That assumes a few hundred million go to administrative costs). If a third of these systems failed out of warranty, you're talking about a class-action lawsuit with 3.5 million members each having a legitimate claim of at least $300 in damages. $300 * 3.5 million = $1.05 billion dollars. $1 billion < $1.05 billion, plus there's less risk of a bigger judgement, and no legal costs. *That* is what it takes to get a $1 billion warranty extension approved.

The Wii is nothing but a fad. I expect sales to take a dramatic downturn in 2008. The control scheme is just too limiting, as is the 480p resolution. The PlayStation 3 is easily worth the $500 they are currently selling it for. Not only do you get the most powerful gaming console on the market, you get a top-rated Blu-ray player and upscaling DVD player. In addition, it now supports multimedia streaming. With its built-in wireless networking, card readers, free online play, and five free Blu-ray discs, the PS3 is a much better value than the Xbox 360 Elite. True, there aren't that many great games on the market, but just wait a few months.
