Ian:

You can buy it for $250 and not have the service but its the service that makes the device interesting.

The issue with something really different, and this is more different than I think many realize, is folks try to compare it to what they have seen in PCs and conclude it sucks.

That's where marketing closes the gap, had a little company come up with the iPhone (costing $600, no fast WAN, $80+ service, big, fixed battery etc.) it would have belly flopped.

This is a machine designed with the idea of the web becoming the platform over time, the increased value should, if successful, come from the service.

There is a lot of promise here, the question is how long until someone with a budget has an ah hah! Experience?

The author's usage of Web 2.0 is distracting and, frankly, incorrect. Can the rest of the article be trusted?

Frankly I believe that nobody wants a barebone pc "just to surf on the internet", and even less people want to pay a monthly fee, which is a pretty unpopular method of payment. Besides, most people have old pcs at home, or can get them from friends for almost no money: if you install ubuntu o puppy linux on them you can have the same level of service without any monthly fee and only slightly more hassle.
Even a trained monkey can install Ubuntu to the level required to surf, watch movies or write documents nowadays, you know?
If you can't figure out how to use ubuntu which comes on some dell pc's, you obviously have the IQ of a rat. Honestly, it's not that freeking hard to open a menu organized intuitively by application type, with a brilliant all-in-one package management system and plugin finder, is it?

hmm might take this over a mac mini, although you can buy older mac mini's used for about the same price, and not be stuck with a monthly fee. Also, the Zonbox is missing DVI out which should be a given nowadays.

Wow, I like the look over it. Very little plastic -- Bonus!

I'm impressed by it as well, Rob. The only thing that is a stickler for me is the monthly cost. I dont want to have to pay $12.95 up to $19.95. Granted, those prices are for online storage, but still.

I think it's a great idea, but would worry that it would be too limiting in a year or so.

Are you bound by a contract when you purchase the unit, or so you simply have to pay monthly if you want to use it?
