Pocket-Sized Casio FS-10 Shoots at 1000 fps

Pocket-Sized Casio FS-10 Shoots at 1000 fps

Besides Casio’s new green-screen-style capture technology on display at CES, one of the most interesting camera debuts was the new Exilim FS-10, a new camera capable of shooting up to 1,000 frames per second for ultra slow-motion video and burst shooting.

Though Casio has demonstrated this kind of quick-shooting tech before in its larger cameras, the FS-10 is the first to do it in such a tiny, pocketable form factor. It measures only 0.64 inches thick, compared to the massive SLR-like form factor of the old EX-F1, Casio’s last cam to do the slow-mo trick.

iRiver’s Wave Phone Taps Wi-Fi for Voice

iRiver

Iriver’s new Wave Home concept may have been the company’s showstealer at this year’s CES, but it wasn’t the only one to bear the new Wave label. The lesser-known Wave Internet Phone will run head-to-head with the iPod Touch by piling PDA-like features into a tiny, flexible device that’s lacks everything but a cell modem.

I had a chance to play with the Wave Phone briefly, and while it was still just a prototype with bits of leftover Korean still seeding the menus, the interface left much to be desired for a do-it-all mobile device. Web surfing, especially, struck me as pretty dismal compared to the high bar that’s been set by Apple’s nearly untouchable Touch.

Ecco GPS Helps You Find Your Car

Ecco GPS Helps You Find Your Car

Sure, the big companies often make a big splash at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but that doesn’t mean smaller companies can’t bring cool products to the show floor. IDC Design Corporation showed off its Ecco Personal Pocket GPS Locator, aiming to give travelers and other folks a handy, reliable way to get back to particular locations…like their hotel, or where they parked their car.

Mobility Radeon 4000 Doubles Performance?

Mobility Radeon 4000 Doubles Performance?

With all the announcements spilling out of CES last week, AMD’s release of the entirely revamped ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 platform seems to have slipped under radar, which is surprising considering how bold AMD’s performance claims for the new chips are. According to the AMD representatives I sat down with at the show, the Mobility Radeon 4000 series cards will double performance benchmarks set by the old 3000 series.

Sharp Gets into Soundbars at CES

Sharp Gets into Soundbars at CES

Though not likely the first name you think of when it comes to home audio, Sharp has expanded its speaker line with two new soundbars, an increasingly popular option for complementing HDTVs without the bulk and expense of a full home theater setup.

Sharp showed off the HT-SB300 and HT-SB200 at its sprawling CES booth. Though it was difficult to get a feel for sound quality in the booming central hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the bars sported compact designs that matched the glossy black finish of Sharp’s Aquos HDTVs to a tee. Both offer 34 watts of output through dual stereo speakers and built-in subs, but the higher-end SB300 adds a support for a number of different audio decoding formats, including DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Virtual Speaker, plus has output for a separate subwoofer.

Casio Cams Do Green-Screen Style Editing

Casio Cams Do Green-Screen Style Editing

You don’t have to be a weatherman or a Hollywood actor to walk in front of a colored wall and show up on film with a dramatic background anymore. Casio has brought the chroma-key technology typically used in blue screens down to a consumer level with the Exilim EX-Z400, EX-Z270, and EX-S12, which can create composite images right inside the camera.

Casio demonstrated the technology this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, where people in front of a blank wall were superimposed onto various bizarre backgrounds for the sake of showing off the tech. After shooting a video of a person with a static background, taking a snapshot of the background without the person allows the camera to process it out completely, editing in whatever image the photographer wants.

Nokia Launches Sleek Budget Models at CES

Nokia Launches Sleek Budget Models at CES

Though the lion’s share of attention at Nokia’s CES booth was directed to their flagship N97 (the prototype model of which they tethered to a floor rep so it couldn’t travel more than three feet,) the company actually has a number of interesting inexpensive models on the way, too. I had a chance to handle all three of the upcoming models as I waited for a chance to handle the almighty N97.

Outgoing FCC Chair Backs DTV Switch

Outgoing FCC Chair Backs DTV Switch

Speaking at last week’s CES show in Las Vegas, outgoing FCC chairman Kevin Martin said that delaying the United States’ February 17, 2009 transition to digital television could confuse consumers and, thereby, create higher costs for the transition going forward. Martin noted that all publicity and education materials about the transition—not just from the FCC but from the entire television industry—has been centered on the February 17, 2009 date.

However, Martin also said it’s important to make sure the government’s converter box voucher program is operating so consumers who rely on over-the-air television broadcasts can set hands on a converter before the switchover deadline.

Digital Blue Teams With Lego

Digital Blue Teams With Lego

Want a digital camera, MP3 player, walkie talkie, or USB drive that look like they’re made from Lego bricks? If the answer is yes, you’re in luck. From the middle of this year you’ll be able to buy them, thanks to an alliance between manufacturer Digital Blue and Lego.

There will also be boom boxes and alarm clock radios with classic Lego brick elements scaled to oversized proportions. Finally, for the pre-teen boys, Bionicle digital cameras will go on sale at Toys "R" Us this fall.

“Digital Blue is extremely proud to team up with Lego Systems, Inc, a highly regarded brand among generations of parents and kids throughout the world,” said Tim Hall, CEO of Digital Blue. “This partnership helps us to achieve our goal of expanding globally in support of a prominent brand worldwide.”

CyberPatrol Announces Threat Detector

71% of teens don’t tell their parents what they do online. That’s natural, it’s a time for secrecy. But parents still want to know, and a pair of new products from CyberPatrol, introduced at CES, give them the ability.

Threat Detector is a new, free online assessment tool to help parents review their children’s online surfing habits, which can keep them safe in the long run. The other addition is an enhancement to ChatGuard, which can protect kids against cyberbullying, adding a list of key cyberbullying terms have been added to existing inappropriate terms. ChatGard blocks objectionable words in instant messaging (IM), whether they are sent or received. ChatGard can also be set to block the user’s home address, phone number, and other information that would be inappropriate for children to share via IM.
