Tecmo Koei E3 2010 Roundup

Tecmo Koei may not be the biggest player in the game, but it frequently releases titles that gain a loyal following in the market they are targeting. Sometimes that market can be somewhat obscure. With several games based on Asian myths and history, like the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors series, plus properties based on existing Japanese properties, like the new Fist of a North Star game, Tecmo Koei may not be a publisher you are familiar with, but those that are eagerly await each new installment of its properties.

At E3 this year, Tecmo Koei may not have had the biggest booth. They may not have had the flashiest games that stole the show. What they do have are some satisfying games that will appeal to certain fans, and could win over others if they can convince them to try them out.

Best Games of E3 2010

This is a painful article to write. With each new keystroke, another game jumps back to mind and makes its case to be among the ten measly games featured on our best of list. In all honesty, this could be a top 20 best games of E3, and it would still be hard to exclude some of the titles that debuted.

Below are what we considered to be the best games of E3. We chose the games based on a highly scientific method of selection that involved intense formulas and equations coupled with a super computer running various scenarios that – OK, OK, these are the ones that made us drool like fan boys. The list is extremely subjective, and likely to illicit strong reactions both for and against.

Trine 2 Trailer Debuts

The original Trine was a side-scrolling platformer with a puzzle element that put you in the role of three characters fighting an undead army in a ruined kingdom.  It became an instant success, and a sequel is now officially on the way.

Following the death of the king- who died without naming an heir- an attack has forced the people of the kingdom to flee. Three people- a thief, a knight, and a wizard- meet by chance at a magical location in the abandoned kingdom, called the Astral Academy. The three meet in the treasure chamber of the Academy and all touch an artifact called the Trine at the same time, which fuses their souls, and allows them to have only one physical presence at a time that they can switch between at will.

Isaac Clarke, the hero of the first Dead Space, is having a bad day. After surviving the events of the first game (sorry if revealing that the hero does not die is a spoiler), he finds himself on the densely populated space station known as the Sprawl. You can probably guess what happens next.

Isaac wakes on the Sprawl to find himself in the hospital, suffering from a weird form of dementia. Bad things begin to happen. The Necromorph horde has begun to turn the population of the space station into creepy things, and Isaac is once again thrust into the situation of having to kill everything he finds, in inventive and graphically pleasing ways.

Hands-On with Driver: San Francisco

In 2006, following the critical and commercial flop of the last Driver game, Driver: Parallel Lines, the former publisher, Atari, sold the franchise to Ubisoft along with the developer Reflection Studios. Ubisoft planned to revitalize the once best-selling franchise, and four years later, they have done just that.

The last few Driver games were not what one might traditionally consider good- or successful for that matter- so it is no surprise that when bringing the franchise back, Ubisoft decided to start from scratch and stick with the things that worked while improving or discarding those that didn’t. Gone are the thinly veiled attempts to emulate the Grand Theft Auto series, instead the franchise returns to what made it great- the driving. And it is a much welcome return.

What does it take to make a killer hack-and-slash title? Tons and tons of enemies. Ninety-Nine Nights II delivers with a new engine that allows it to flood players with over 300 realistically rendered enemies on the screen at one time. Good luck.

WarHammer 40,000: Space Marine- First Look

The WarHammer series is one that has gained a serious cult following over the years, but has remained largely unknown to the general public. What began as a tabletop, dice-based game back in 1987 soon found its way onto the PC, spawning several real-time strategy games, including the Dawn of War series that featured numerous expansion packs and a sequel. Further building on the franchise, publisher THQ and developer Relic Entertainment have begun development on a third-person shooter with RPG elements based on one of the character classes in the game.

Getting Stabby with Rush’n Attack: Ex-Patriot

If there’s one thing the 2010 version of Rush’n Attack has in common with the 1985 original, it’s knives. Lots and lots of knives. The stealth-based side scroller drops you into the shoes of an American soldier behind enemy lines in Cold-War-era Russia, tiptoeing through shadows, sneaking through vents, and dispatching guard after hapless guard to escape.

Hardly a franchise in need of more sequels, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will reboot the series with a fresh-start as Gabriel Belmont, an elite knight in the Brotherhood of Light. Highlights include an upgradeable whip, level design that becomes more linear as the game progresses, and of course, voice acting from nerd icon Sir Patrick Stewart.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions First Look

The new Spider-Man game from developer Beenoz and publisher Activision puts you in the role of four different Spider-Men from different times and dimensions, all with their own looks and moves. If you are not a comic fan, you probably aren’t familiar with the concept of multiple universes (weirdo). In the Marvel Universe, there are multiple dimensions, each with their own history. Usually the characters are the same people just in different situations, but not always. The names might be the same, but in some cases that is as far as the similarities go.
