Virtual reality and DotA 2 fan? We have the VR headset for you

It’s an accepted fact of virtual reality, that nobody looks cool doing it. You can feel like a digital god when the headset is on, but the rest of the world just sees you flailing around with some plastic sticks in your hand. Fortunately there is a way to add a bit of style to your VR experience, by buying the new Dota 2 special edition HTC Vive headset.

Priced at $800 just like the regular version, there isn’t a whole lot that’s particularly special about this HTC Vive, but it does come equipped with a fancy red head strap that features a logo for The International. There’s also a Dota 2 logo which – if you’ve seated the headset right – should sit right on the ridge at the back of your head.

Currently up for sale on the International’s ‘Secret Shop’ within the Valve WeLoveFine store, the headset with unique head band is likely only available in a select number, though we aren’t privy to what that total is. It would probably make sense to jump on this quickly if you fancy it.

However it does get us thinking that this probably won’t (and shouldn’t) be the last aesthetic option for VR users. Early adopters have been adding googly eyes to HMDs since the days of the Oculus Rift DK1, so it must only be a matter of time before someone creates a skin for the Vive, or a new cloth covering for the Rift.

There are some customization options for the Vive and Rift out already, though they aren’t to do with aesthetics. VRCover has been offering washable faceplates and covers since both mainstream headsets were released, so if you find your VR headset getting a little too sweaty, there’s a good solution already available.

The HTC Vive XR Elite without the battery cradle attached.

The Vive XR Elite has one seriously cool party trick.

Debuted at CES 2023, the latest headset from HTC is its first attempt at combining a high-end VR headset with AR technology. But more than that, within seconds, it can convert from a strapped-on headset to its much lighter glasses form. Just remove the battery cradle that straps to the back of your head, and you're left with a pair of lightweight XR glasses that weighs just 0.53 pounds.

Apple ‘Reality’ AR/VR headset: major leak shares new details
A render of Apple's VR headset.

A new report reveals several interesting details about Apple's AR/VR headset, which is expected to arrive in 2023. Apple remains silent on this product, but there have been enough patents filed, as well as leaks, to provide confirmation that the iPhone maker has done intensive research into the first of several AR wearables.

The latest news comes from The Information, which has provided some of the most detailed data of any leaker so far. The headset was already expected to be incredibly lightweight, which could be due to the battery being worn around the waist, as explained in the report. Apple's VR solution is said to feature a hot-swap design for the battery that would make the reported one-to-two-hour battery life less annoying.
