Time for a timeout: Motorola is temporarily shelving its smartwatch portfolio

It may be time to say goodbye to Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch series — at least for now.

Shakil Barkat, corporate vice president of Wearables and Product Development at Motorola, tells the Verge that the company doesn’t “see enough pull in the market to put [a smartwatch] out at this time.” Barkat did not rule it out completely, but he said Motorola will wait for wrist-based technology to improve.

“Wearables do not have broad enough appeal for us to continue to build on it year after year,” Barkat said, according to the Verge.

Android Wear has been lagging far behind its competitors this year — hardly any new smartwatches were released running Google’s operating system. Manufacturers may be waiting for the big revamp coming in Android Wear 2.0, which has been delayed until early 2017. Google is also rumored to be working on two new smartwatches to debut alongside the latest iteration of the OS.

The original Moto 360 debuted in 2014 and was followed up by a second generation model in 2015 — both devices have been received positively. Smartwatch sales have been lackluster, however, and Apple has been dominating the market with the Apple Watch. An October 2016 report by the International Data Corporation found that smartwatch shipments in the third quarter dropped 51.6 percent year over year — from 5.6 million to 2.7 million.

Behind Apple, which only shipped 1.1 million smartwatches in the third quarter of 2016, is Garmin, followed by Samsung. These numbers do not take into account Samsung’s new Gear S3 smartwatch, and the report only takes into account a small number of Apple Watch Series 2 sales.

The report indicates that Lenovo’s Motorola “suffered the largest year-over-year decline among the leading vendors … In addition, [the third quarter] marks the first time in which Motorola did not introduce a new smartwatch in time for the holiday quarter, adding to its decline in the market.”

“We believe the wrist still has value and there will be a point where they provide value to consumers more than they do today,” Barkat tells the Verge.

The Moto Watch 100 might skip out on Google’s Wear OS entirely for a custom OS
moto watch 100 wear os no motorola leak 2

A new Motorola-branded smartwatch, the Moto Watch 100, has been in the works for months now, with the chip shortage being a major factor in its delay. Now, the wearable is on the cusp of launch -- and a new leak from Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) says it may not be running Google's Wear OS as expected.

The Moto Watch 100 is a cheap Motorola-branded watch by CE Brands that's had some of its specifications leak earlier. As far as hardware goes, it will be quite standard, should the rumors pan out. It'll be a light watch at 29 grams, with a 355mAh battery and support for Bluetooth 5.0. All the old familiar sensors, from accelerometers to gyroscopes, are there, and it'll be a fitness-focused watch. What is interesting about this watch is the alleged choice of operating system. Rather than adopting Google's Wear OS as expected, the Motorola Watch 100 will, according to Blass, run an all-new Moto Watch OS.

Moto Watch 100 leaked render.

A new Motorola smartwatch is on its way as renders and specs of the Moto Watch 100 leaked online in advance of its anticipated launch. CE Brands, the current owner of Motorola-branded smartwatches, has already said it has completed work on a Moto Watch 100, which is tipped to be an affordable offering.

The latest development comes from 91Mobiles. The publication has shared renders and purported specs of the upcoming Moto Watch 100. It reveals a circular display with a minimalistic design. The right edge seems to house two buttons with a metallic finish, while the watch body could have a matte finish. It might appear from the renders that the Moto Watch 100 could sport a rotating bezel, but the report says the device will not have that feature.

A new Motorola-branded smartwatch is on its way for a launch by the end of the year, according to a press release shared by CE Brands, the current owners of the Motorola brand for smartwatches. The company has claimed to have already completed work on a Moto Watch 100, branding it an affordable premium smartwatch that will be going into mass production over the next month.

"Our newest smartwatch, the Moto Watch 100, which is designed for an entry-level price point, is scheduled to begin mass production in November 2021. With several major retailers in line for initial orders to test the product, we believe the Motorola brand coupled with an affordable premium-feeling smartwatch has the potential to be a truly disruptive product," the release reads.
