Google closing Picnik, along with a number of other services

Google's New Year clear out will involve shutting down a number of services, including the web-based photo-editing service Picnik. Google bought the company behind the popular website two years ago and said it will move some of its editing tools to Google+ in April as it continues its drive to push more users to the social networking site.

Google has announced it will be retiring the online photo-editing service Picnik, together with a number of other products that the web giant feels “replicate other features, haven’t achieved the promise we had hoped for or can’t be properly integrated into the overall Google experience.”

Services that are affected besides Picnik include:

- Google Message Continuity (GMC): support to be ended. “Current GMC customers will be able to use GMC for the duration of their contract.”

- Google Sky Map: to be open-sourced. Google will be “collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University in a partnership that will see further development of Sky Map as a series of student projects.”

- Needlebase: to be retired on June 1, 2012.

- Social Graph API: “The API isn’t experiencing the kind of adoption we’d like, and is being deprecated as of today.” To be fully retired on April 20, 2012.

- Urchin: “New Urchin Software licenses will no longer be available after March 2012.”

“Changing products that people love is hard….But we’re excited to focus on creating a beautifully simple, intuitive user experience across Google—an experience that will change the lives of millions of people,” Google’s vice president of product management Dave Girouard wrote on the company’s official blog explaining the decision.

Picnik, which was bought by Google two years ago, will be retired on April 19, however, Picnik announced on its homepage that some of its photo editing tools will be moved to Google+, the new social networking site which this week claimed to have 90 million users.

Until Picnik’s closure, users will have the chance to try its premium services for free, and anyone that’s already paid for them will receive a full refund.

Picnik is undoubtedly a very popular product, with an interface that makes photo editing a breeze. Anything from a simple crop to advanced special effects are offered, and the online tools will no doubt be missed by many.

It’s not clear yet how many of Picnik’s photo-editing tools will be pushed across to Google+, but what if you don’t want to open a Google+ account but would still like a quick and simple web-based solution when it comes to tweaking your pics?

Here are some suggestions that should help you out:

FotoFlexer – very similar to Picnik in look and feel; offers many effects, including distortions; ability to work with layers, too. One imagines this site is going to see a big increase in traffic once Picnik disappears from the scene.

Phixr – not such a clean interface; consider it as a simplified version of Picnik. Offers a few interesting options such as noise removal and ‘fun effects.’

befunky – another site which operates along the same lines as Picnik, though befunky feels a little clunkier to use. Still, it offers lots of editing options and may appeal to some, especially those who like to jazz up their images with stickers and such like.

iPiccy – nice, clean interface; lots of options for editing and adding effects. The site is currently in beta, but we can see this one becoming pretty popular with those who enjoy using Picnik.

pixlr – a more Photoshop-looking interface, with a comprehensive set of adjustment tools. Decent filter list. Much more powerful than Picnik, but may be daunting for some. Clean interface though and well worth a look.

Google+ is not a facebook wanna be and it's actually pretty great. And if you already have a Gmail and GoogleDocs and all that stuff like I do, it's amazing the way they're streamlining it. Google+ has also encouraged Facebook to get better because of the competition. I get the people hate change but like Trevor said you have plenty of other options. I use Picnik all the time when I'm too lazy to work with photoshop but I think that they have been more than courteous in this. You get premium free. They don't want your money they're closing shop on projects so that they can better develop new ones. Google is innovative and they do a lot. They do a lot of things free of charge too. They haven't "F'ed you in the 'A'" They've told everyone way ahead of time and they've given you unlimited use of they're product until then, and they've refunded us. You've have many options to choose from so move on. And I doubt that you will stop using Google Search after Picnik. Haha. That's just you inconveniencing yourself.
    1. ladyhaly at 9:47pm 26th January 2012 I completely agree with you, Susan. Google isn't evil. They are being fair. Competition is good because it actually motivates people to work their ass off to give a better experience for the registered users. I'd be mad if Google didn't refund the people who paid for picnik but they did--- and they're also letting us use premium services for free. If I wanted people's money, I wouldn't refund nor would I let anyone use the premium services free. Better to get people to try out the site before it disappears--- but they did, and they're just integrating the services into Google + which isn't really bad. Just because people have a Google + account doesn't mean they stop using Facebook. Heck, just because you have a Twitter doesn't mean you stop posting status post on your Fb account. So for Wardbirdcentral... Your whole rant was like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Grow up and be sensible.
  2. WarbirdCentral at 9:17am 26th January 2012 Google used to be my favorite use of tools and sites, but now not only do you kill a great site, you are forcing us to use a POS like Google+ which should be called Google Minus. It sucks, you will never beat facebook, your way behind in the game, you need to stop being a sheep and branch off a new better system. Thanks for F'n me in the "A" again, just like you did when my website started getting more and more hits because of a article on CNN and you accused me of pumping up my hits on my site and then taking the $3000.00 in funds from me. you guys suck!
  3. Sharon Wofford Haynes at 1:30pm 24th January 2012 Google don't do this it is a shame millions of us pay to use this service and love it. If it ant broke don't fix it!! Listen to the users not the CEO'S making crazy decisons! ONe lady makes her living using your service yew take the little woman down!! Please change your mind let us keep Picnik.!!!! I will not use google search I will take it off the day you take off Picnik!!!
  4. shy at 8:18am 24th January 2012 I use Picnik for my photography business... thanks Google. you suck!! Glad you might be getting something more out of this... like forcing people to use your "lame facebook wannabe" website. But what about the rest of us? like the millions of people who pay for and love Picnik. I wont even be using Google search anymore.
  5. lswilson at 3:10pm 22nd January 2012 I have ended up using Picnik more than my Adobe Photoshop. I really hate to see this go. I would even pay more monthly fees to keep this.
  6. slpton at 12:56pm 22nd January 2012 this is insane - I use Picnik for all pics, but I don't want to have to use Google+ for features.
  7. Phixr at 11:15am 22nd January 2012 FYI, the algorithms Phixr uses are more precise than Picnik's. And it has at least the same amount of filters and effects.
  8. Cindy Maples at 3:13pm 21st January 2012 I love Picnik - this is stupid. I use this tool for all my photo editing - I need find a site that will not keep killing their tools - starting to not trust Google.
    1. Kenny Strawn at 6:54pm 21st January 2012 Well, even without Picnik, there's always the Google+ Creative Kit (which allows users to edit already-posted Google+ photos on the fly without have to download and repost them), and oh, it's got a similar feature set.
    2. Kenny Strawn at 6:56pm 21st January 2012 The Google+ Creative Kit has a similar feature set (and oh, by the way, is integrated into the Google+ photo album renderer, so you can edit photos that are already posted on Google+ without having to delete and repost them).
      1. WarbirdCentral at 9:21am 26th January 2012 Who wants to be forced to use a POS like Google+ to use those features, not me!
