New ‘Suicide Squad’ photos give a closer look at the colorful gang of supervillians

The bad guys are doing good work in the latest photos from DC Entertainment’s Suicide Squad. The new images, released by Entertainment Weekly, show off the cast as their supervillain characters.

Deadshot (played by Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and The Joker (Jared Leto) pop up most frequently in the photos, but they’re also joined by more of the gang of former criminals. Fans also get a look at Monster T (Common), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). Even Suicide Squad director David Ayer appears.

The film centers on a group of imprisoned supervillains who are brought together by a government agency, led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), to take on a dangerous black ops mission to save the world. At stake for the convicts is clemency, so playing the hero is worth their while. Of course, they’re not exactly the most trustworthy bunch, so just how they’ll manage to pull off the task remains to be seen.

The photos give us a glimpse at life on both sides of bars. In one, Harley Quinn is shown enjoying tea and a romance novel in the comfort of her cell, while in the other images, the characters roam free. The dark and gritty side of the movie is on display, but we also see the more lighthearted side.

The film was previously reported to be so dark an on-set therapist was on hand, but Warner Bros. ended up ordering reshoots to make it more fun. The stakes are high for the studio, especially after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice disappointed fans and critics alike. Warner Bros. has high hopes for Suicide Squad, though, with a sequel planned and possibly a Harley Quinn spinoff project in the works.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.

They might not stick around very long, but the cast of director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has been officially confirmed -- and it's an impressive list, to put it mildly.

Gunn revealed the full cast of the upcoming DC film on Twitter. The project is reported to be a soft relaunch of the franchise after the underwhelming performance of the 2016 Suicide Squad film. It will "take the franchise in a new direction" instead of serving as a direct sequel.

Taika Waititi may join a team of fellow MCU alums in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad
Taika Waititi Akira

The Suicide Squad could make the DC Extended Universe even more Marvel-ous. According to Deadline, Thor: Ragnarok's own Taika Waititi is in talks to join The Suicide Squad, which will be directed by Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn.

There's no word yet on which character Waititi might be playing in the movie or how big his role will be. Still, Waititi's addition to the cast would help make The Suicide Squad into an unofficial Marvel Cinematic Universe reunion. In addition to Gunn and Waititi, The Suicide Squad will feature Idris Elba, who played the Heimdall in the MCU, and Nathan Fillion, who made cameos in both of Gunn's Marvel flicks. Dave Bautista, who appears as Drax in the MCU, was reportedly approached to appear in The Suicide Squad, but those discussions seem to have stalled.
