On October 5, Jackman posted the first image of the movie’s poster to Twitter, confirming that it would be titled Logan. The use of the character’s assumed name seems to be an overt reference to the classic Old Man Logan comic book storyline written by Mark Millar.
Logan apparently gets underway in 2024, as per the second page of the script, which director James Mangold posted on Twitter. He’s drinking heavily, and his powers are fading: while his healing abilities are still in effect, his regeneration takes much longer than it did previously.
The youthful hand in the movie’s poster belongs to a young mutant girl, according to a report from The Wrap. This is important because as of 2024, mutant births are becoming more and more of a rarity, which is revealed to be the result of a shadowy operation called “Transigen” that turns mutant children into “killing machines.”
Not unlike Wolverine, Professor X is struggling with the ravages of old age. His powers are also diminished, and he sometimes has difficulty remembering Logan. The albino mutant Caliban, played in the movie by Stephen Merchant, acts as his caregiver.
Logan certainly seems to be quite different to the X-Men movies we’ve seen in the past. Wolverine’s last stand looks set to be pretty bleak — but after more than fifteen years playing the character, it will certainly be interesting to see Jackman break some new ground in the role on his way out.
Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
