Netflix releases trailer for mysterious new series ‘The OA,’ which debuts Friday

Writer and actress Brit Marling first caught the attention of Hollywood with her fantastic, under-the-radar 2011 drama Another Earth and her 2012 faux documentary Sound Of My Voice, and her next project appears to channel some of the same understated sci-fi themes — but in a very different sort of format.

Netflix released the first trailer for Marling’s upcoming original series The OA this week, and the eight-part project promises to explore some heavy philosophical concepts while following the story of a blind girl who returns with her sight restored years after her mysterious disappearance.

Scheduled to premiere this month on the streaming video service, The OA is directed by Marling’s frequent collaborator, director Zal Batmanglij, who directed her in Sound of my Voice and the 2013 drama The East.

Described by Netflix as “a powerful, mind-bending tale about identity, human connection, and the borders between life and death,” The OA was co-produced by Netflix and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, as well as Marling, Batmanglij, and True Detective producer Anonymous Content.

Promising to “upend notions about what long-format stories can be,” the series remains a relatively secretive production, with little known about the plot beyond what we see see in the trailer. It’s unknown whether the series is envisioned as a multiseason project or a stand-alone, single-season arc.

Along with Marling in the lead role, the series’ cast also includes Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith, Jason Isaacs, Alice Krige, Patrick Gibson, Brendan Meyer, Ian Alexander, and Brandon Perea.

The first season of The OA will premiere in full December 16 on Netflix.

Like Netflix’s hit series One Day? Then watch these three great rom-coms shows right now
A man writes down something for a girl in One Day.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as a soapy, melodramatic romantic comedy. The bad ones are often still supremely watchable, and plenty of rom-coms prove to be much better than just plain bad. If you've been watching One Day on Netflix, you should know that it's far from the only series to steal the rom-com formula that works so well at the movies.

We've selected some other great TV rom-coms that prove as good reminders that love is real, and for all of its many difficulties, falling in love with someone can be pretty great. And, because these are TV shows and not movies, many of these rom-coms allow for more than just a single complication to develop between their central characters.

This obscure Liam Neeson vs. James Bond movie is a new Netflix hit. Here’s why you should watch it
Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson in Seraphim Falls.

If you've never heard of the Western Seraphim Falls, then you're not alone. The film barely had a limited theatrical release in 2006 before it spent the better part of two decades in cinematic purgatory. Or at least that was true before Netflix added it to its film library. Now, all of a sudden, Seraphim Falls is one of the most popular movies on Netflix.

By itself, that's not too surprising. Liam Neeson has proven to be very popular with Netflix subscribers, and another one of his lesser-known movies, Made In Italy, is also currently in Netflix's top 10 movie list. But if you're trying to decide whether this particular Western will appeal to you, we're sharing three reasons why you should watch Neeson's Seraphim Falls on Netflix.

Like Netflix’s new sci-fi movie The Kitchen? Then watch these three great shows
Izi and Benji run together in The Kitchen.

The sci-fi genre covers a wide range of stories set in various strange worlds. Some science fiction is set in a far-flung future or in a distant galaxy, while other sci-fi stories occupy worlds that feel much more obviously like our own. There disparate settings can offer some insights into the world we actually live in and can be the basis for truly fascinating stories.

Netflix's The Kitchen, which is set in a future world where all public housing has been eliminated, definitely exists in a pretty grounded version of reality. Like all of the best sci-fi movies on Netflix, though, it also has plenty to say about how we live today. If you've watched and enjoyed the movie, these are three sci-fi shows that may scratch that same itch.
