Samsung’s new S8 high-resolution monitors boast more sustainable design

Samsung has unveiled its high-resolution monitor lineup for 2021, headlined by the flagship S8 series. In total, there are 12 different models spanning the S8, S7, and S6 series, each delivering advanced features such as HDR 10 support, 178-degree-wide viewing angles, and color accurate designs. This year, Samsung is also highlighting the improved environmental impacts that these monitors bring, which should make you feel a little better about your purchase as you continue to outfit and upgrade your work-from-home office space.

“Our 2021 high-resolution lineup delivers dazzling picture quality and powers enhanced performance, all the while ensuring user comfort with a streamlined, eco-conscious design,” said Hyesung Ha, a Samsung senior vice president.

The eco-conscious design includes several components. The company’s Eco Saving Plus technology helps reduce power consumption by up to 10% by dynamically adjusting the brightness of black portions of the screen while maintaining a brightness elsewhere, Samsung said. The company is highlighting a number of certifications earned by the high-resolution monitors. All the monitors have received certifications from organizations like the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), Energy Star, and the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO) for sustainability.

And even if you’re not buying into Samsung’s environmental marketing message, there are still plenty of features that you can appreciate from these screens. All the high-resolution monitors boast Eye Care certification from TÜV Rheinland, and Samsung’s Adaptive Picture technology automatically adjusts the brightness and color temperature depending on the ambient conditions around you for eye comfort. Also present are staples like flicker-free screen technology and reduced blue light emission.

The flagship of the lineup is the S8, which comes in either 27- or 32-inch screen sizes. These 4K UHD panels support over 1 billion colors, Samsung claims, and the S8 supports up to 99% of the sRGB color gamut. The S8 connects via USB-C and features its own USB 3.0 hub. The VESA mount will help with ergonomics, allowing the S8 to be raised and lowered, tilted, swiveled, and pivoted. Prices start at just $429.

The S7 series is very similar to the S8 — options include the same screen sizes as its more premium siblings, as well as support for UHD resolution. To keep prices more affordable, the S7 makes a few sacrifices. USB-C 90W charging is notably missing on the S7, and the stand on this display only supports tilting.

Samsung did not provide pricing information for the S7 series.

The S6 scales down to a QHD resolution and features either 24-, 27-, 32-, and 34-inch panels. All the panels support USB-C Daisy Chain technology to make setting up a multimonitor workspace easier, and there is even a LAN jack for docking. The 34-inch model is a curved screen boasting a UWQHD resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Samsung’s S6 monitors support picture-by-picture and picture-in-picture viewing modes to help with multitasking if you’re not connecting multiple screens together. Gamers will appreciate the AMD FreeSync support on the S6 series.

The S6 starts at $359, though the premium curved 34-inch model is priced at $679. All three series will be available starting in April.

AI’s latest problem is deepfake disaster content for farming engagement
Fake and recycled videos from disasters in Venezuela and China are making social media feeds harder to trust when people need accurate updates quickly
Electronics, Screen, Adult

Social feeds around the earthquakes in Venezuela filled with recycled footage and AI-generated destruction. Severe weather in China attracted its own wave of AI disaster videos, including fabricated flood scenes and false reports of power outages.

It creates an ugly race. People want immediate evidence of what happened, and AI slop can deliver something dramatic before reliable information catches up. Authentic updates are left competing with fiction precisely when confusion can send people scrambling for answers.
