Windows 11 widgets finally opening to third-party developers

Add as a preferred source on Google

Rivaling what has already been done on iOS and Android, Microsoft detailed at its Build 2022 conference that developers can soon build third-party widgets for the operating system. As has been long-rumored, the option is set to become available beginning “later this year,” and will be powered by Microsoft’s Adaptive Cards platform.

According to Microsoft’s Panos Panay, these new third-party widgets can be “companion experiences” for traditional Win32 desktop, or Progressive Web Apps. While these specific widgets have not been confirmed, this means apps like Twitter and Discord could add companion Windows 11 widgets, so you can peek at your feeds or chats at a glance without opening the app.

It would be a welcome change. As of right now, all the Widgets in Windows 11 are from Microsoft only, covering things like traffic, weather, and sports. This gives app developers more ways for users to surface their app content in Windows, as Live Tiles used to do in Windows 10.

“We’re energized by the customer feedback on Widgets to date, people are enjoying the quick access to content most important to them in a way that is seamless without breaking their flow,” said Panos Panay, chief product officer of Windows and devices.

Adaptive cards, which will power these third-party widgets, are already in use across Microsoft’s other apps and services like Teams and Outlook. It is a platform-agnostic method of sharing and displaying blocks of information and user interface content but without the need for a complex CSS code. Basically, a developer can create one adaptive card for all of Microsoft’s services using a single code so that the app will look and behave the way it is supposed to in the said specific app.

“Users win because everything feels familiar. Host apps win because they control the user experience. And card authors win because their content gets broader reach without any additional work,” explains Microsoft on adaptive cards.

Third-party widgets in Windows 11 weren’t the only thing that Microsoft shared at Build 2022. Panos Panay also detailed a vision for how apps that create and store content in the cloud could integrate that content into familiar places in Windows 11’s File Explorer, as well as file dialogues. With that feature, Microsoft hopes Windows could provide seamless app installation and content discovery across devices.

Microsoft is also going all-in on ARM-based PCs with new tools for developers to build native ARM apps through Project Volterra. The company also detailed a new Live Share feature for Teams, which makes meetings more interactive.

Asus’ latest Zenbook puts a seriously bright OLED screen inside an impossibly slim body
The Zenbook 14 Air is only 11mm thick but still packs a 77Wh battery
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Asus has introduced a new AMD-powered version of the Zenbook 14 Air 2026, combining a bright OLED display and a large battery inside an 11mm-thick chassis. It weighs 1.19kg, keeping it firmly in ultraportable territory despite the 77Wh battery inside.

The Zenbook 14 Air 2026 itself is not entirely new. Asus launched an Intel configuration powered by the Core Ultra 9 386H in China back in January. The latest version switches to AMD’s Ryzen AI 7 H 445 and is priced at CNY 9,999, or around $1,477. (via Notebookcheck)

Before you blow your student budget, here’s the MacBook that actually suits your major
Confused by the MacBook lineup? I sorted it out so students don't have to
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Apple’s MacBook lineup has become much broader in 2026. The MacBook Neo brings the entry price down considerably, the M5 MacBook Air remains the obvious all-rounder, and the MacBook Pro covers students whose coursework can push a laptop to its limits.

But with a wide range, choosing one becomes harder. Spending more can bring a better display, faster storage, additional ports, and considerably greater performance. However, plenty of students will never take advantage of those upgrades. So, I have narrowed the current lineup down to three models, each aimed at a distinct kind of buyer.

The new Qualcomm Snadragon 8 Elite Gen 5

I want you to sit with this for a second. Qualcomm, the company whose Snapdragon chips sit inside your Android phone and tablet, your Windows laptop, your Meta smart glasses, your Galaxy Watch, and your wireless earbuds, reportedly sent a letter to every major customer telling them prices are going up by double digits.

The price hike will be in effect from September 1, 2026, a recent Bloomberg report claims. Essentially, all the companies placing their chip orders after that will pay a higher price.
