Sony’s SideView app for Android delivers a ‘second screen’ experience

There doesn’t seem to be a business Sony isn’t in: TVs, phones, Blu-ray players, audio equipment are just a few. One of the surprises to come from the technology giant’s CES 2013 press conference was something less hardware-based, but capable of tying all those entertainment pieces together. A new television companion app called SideView works in cooperation with other Sony devices to provide information about what you’re watching.

The app connects with products like Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes to provide you with a more informed viewing experience. Users will be able to browse and find content associated with what they are currently watching, search other channels and services for related programming, and learn more about what is happening or who is acting on screen. It also allows for social media interaction and the app can be used as a remote for Sony TVs and Blu-ray players.

While this app might only reach the real Sony fanatics, those who have decked out their entire entertainment experience with Sony-branded products, it’s still sure to provide an extra layer of convenience for that particular crowd. If nothing else, the remote feature will come in handy when all of your normal remotes have disappeared into the cushy abyss that exists between the couch cushions.

The specter of a U.S. market ban is once again looming over DJI, the biggest drone camera maker in the world. “DJI is on a Defense Department list of Chinese military companies whose products the U.S. armed forces will be prohibited from purchasing in the future,” reports The New York Times.

The defense budget for 2024 mentions a possible ban on importing DJI camera gear for federal agencies and government-funded programs. In 2021, the U.S. Treasury Department put DJI on a list of companies suspected of having ties to the Chinese military and alleged complicity in the surveillance of a minority group, culminating in investment and export restrictions.
