4G LTE version of the Xperia Tablet Z launches in America, priced at $630

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z was first unveiled way back in January, and following a record number of pre-orders, the Wi-Fi version went on sale in late May, however the promised 4G LTE version was missing in action. Today, accompanying news of the Xperia Z1 smartphone, Sony has confirmed the 4G LTE version of the tablet is about to go on sale too.

It’s being sold unlocked through Sony’s own webstore, and is compatible with both AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s 4G networks. The price for this slab of high speed tablet goodness? The 16GB version is yours for $630. Guess what? That’s the exact same cost of a 4G version of Apple’s 16GB iPad with 4G. Coincidence? No, of course it’s not.

So what do you get for your $630? It’s a super slim – just 6.9mm – tablet with a 10.1-inch screen, which has a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, the same as that found on the latest Nexus 7 and the newly announced LG G Pad 8.3. The power is provided by a quad-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor with 2GB of RAM, while the operating system is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The tablet is completely waterproof, as was demonstrated at Mobile World Congress, where various Tablet Z’s dotted around Sony’s stand were continually being dunked in vats of water. It’s also equipped with NFC, an 8-megapixel camera, nine hours of battery life, and a lightweight 495 gram chassis.
