Here’s a chilling tale for anyone looking to launch a torrent site.

Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm was extradited to Denmark last month. And now he’s reportedly living life in solitary confinement for allegedly hacking into the mainframe computers of CSC, a Danish IT firm. That’s a far cry from the description of his imprisonment experience in Sweden, where he allegedly enjoyed multiple freedoms, including the ability to receive mail from the outside, visits from his mother, as well as access to books. It’s worth noting that when facing similar accusations in a separate case in Sweden, he was acquitted of the charges.

Here’s what Svartholm’s mother, Kristina, had to say about Gottfrid’s plight.

“[In Sweden] I visited him every week, unsupervised, sometimes with an additional person. He rang me daily throughout the fall and his letters etc were not checked. For a long time he has had every opportunity in the world to complicate investigations for the Danish police if he had wanted.”

Julian Assange of WikiLeaks also weighed in on the matter, condemning Denmark’s treatment of Svartholm, and offering his support to the Pirate Bay founder.

“It is time someone says it like it is: Gottfrid Svartholm Warg is a political prisoner and Sweden has fallen off the map of decent nations in its treatment of him,” said Assange. “Gottfrid has always been ideologically driven to inform the world; he worked tirelessly to help WikiLeaks expose the slaughter of civilians in Iraq by a US helicopter gunship and was responsible for an important part of our infrastructure.”

Gottfrid’s mother is purportedly attempting to see her son in Denmark again today. It’ll be interesting to see whether Denmark’s approach toward the mastermind of Pirate Bay will change at all, and whether other nations or entities will put any pressure on Denmark to offer greater freedoms to arguably their most infamous inmate, of whom Denmark may be attempting to make an example.
