We reviewed the Basis B1 health tracker during the summer, and not only awarded it an Editor’s Choice badge, but also noted how it stood out from the competition thanks to, “The variety and depth of the data it collects.” Now, Basis Science has improved the B1’s ability to monitor every aspect of your life even further, by introducing an in-depth sleep analysis system.

Basis’ Advanced Sleep Analysis package is almost frighteningly comprehensive. It identifies your REM, deep, and light sleep phases, while also keeping a watch on, “toss and turn” activity, plus any interruptions and the total duration. Basis CEO Jef Holove justifies the update by saying “Proper sleep is just as important as exercise and good nutrition for a healthy lifestyle.”

So what does the B1 do with all this data? Through its mobile or Web apps, a personalized sleep chart will be built over time, including a daily and average sleep score – yes, it really does sound like sleep has been gamified. You’ll be given an overall “Personal Sleep Score,” which can be improved by getting a better night’s sleep, or maintaining a consistent time for going to bed and waking up in the morning.

With Advanced Sleep Analysis added to the Basis B1 watch, it becomes the only health tracker available which not only recognizes the three phases of sleep, but also automatically switches over to its night mode. Existing B1 owners will get all these features on January 21 through version 2.0 of the dedicated Android or iOS app.

If this has tempted you into buying a B1 watch, then you may be interested in the new 2014 Carbon Steel Edition, which is now on sale through Basis’ own website for $200. Promising, “A new look, fit, and feel,” the design has been tweaked, a polished chrome trim added, and a new silicone strap fitted. If you don’t mind waiting a while so you can pick one up in a store, then Best Buy will have the Carbon Steel B1 on its shelves from February 2.

Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
