It looks like Motorola is about to get in on the the book-style foldable trend, as it sent out teasing media packs which hint heavily at the unveiling of a new foldable phone during its CES 2026 press conference.

Motorola already has a number of flip-style foldable phones under its belt, with the current incarnation of its iconic Razr brand having adorned flip foldables since 2019.

Its latest trio of flip foldables launched in April 2025, comprising of the Moto Razr 2025, Razr Plus and Razr Ultra 2025. However, it now seems the brand will dip its toe into the more traditional foldable form factor, and we won’t have long to wait to see what Motorola has in store for us.

Unfold new perspectives

I was fortunate enough to receive one of the media packs, which arrived in a cute little grey bag, and alongside some coffee and cookies to keep me powered through a busy CES week at the start of January, there were a couple of far more intriguing items.

First up was a carefully folded square of brown paper I had to gently tease apart to reveal the message “we’re getting ready to unfold new perspectives at Lenovo Tech World. January 6, 2026.”

Motorola is now owned by Lenovo, and Tech World is the joint press conference for the two brands at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

This is a pretty clear hint that Motorola will have something foldable related to share during the show, but the second item gives us a much better idea of what type of foldable could be in store.

Moto’s first book-style foldable?

At first I thought I was pulling out a small notepad from the bag – a common item I’ve found brands send out over my decade+ career covering tech – but this was something rather different.

Its wooden cover and chunky spine were my first signs, and upon opening, the blank pages fanned out and were illuminated by a colored light. I then realized this book had a micro USB port (a real throwback seeing as we’re firmly in the USB-C port era), for charging said light.

Closing it up, the light switches off. The front cover reads “every fold reveals a possibility”, so I opened it again, and the light was a different color. In fact, with every open it cycled through a different color; pink, blue, red, green, blue, yellow, purple, orange, white.

That’s our lot though. No further information has been provided, so while it seems likely a new foldable is on the horizon in just a few weeks time, we’ll have to wait for the January 6 press conference to find out what exactly Motorola has been working on.

If it does turn out to be a book-style foldable, Motorola will have a device which will be looking to challenge the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 in this form factor. And there could be another major challenger arriving in the second half of 2026 with the iPhone Fold also heavily rumored.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX could be making an AI device that’s slimmer than the iPhone
A slim SpaceX AI device prototype has likely been shown to some investors
Elon Musk talks to the press as he arrives to to have a look at the construction site of the new Tesla Gigafactory near Berlin.

SpaceX has reportedly shown investors a prototype of a handset-like AI device that is slimmer than an iPhone. According to The Wall Street Journal, the device is said to run on a proprietary operating system, use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, and integrate AI technology from xAI.

The project is still at an early stage, and there is no guarantee that SpaceX will turn it into a real product. The report also does not describe it as a traditional smartphone, which is important. It could be a phone, something closer to a dedicated AI device, or a product that never makes it past the prototype stage.
