Start saving money for tires, because the Chevrolet SS is about to get even better.
The 2015 Chevy SS will feature standard Magnetic Ride Control suspension and an optional six-speed manual transmission. The long-rumored new equipment was confirmed by the car’s dealer order guide.
Already deployed on the Camaro, Corvette, and several Cadillac models, Magnetic Ride Control is an adjustable suspension system that uses shock-absorber fluid that’s full of iron filings.
Simply running a current through the fluid changes the behavior of the filings, allowing the suspension to go from firm to soft almost instantaneously. It’s worked pretty well in other General Motors performance cars, so it seems like a fitting addition to the car with the name that stands for Super Sport.
The same is true of the new manual transmission, which will be offered alongside the six-speed automatic that’s already available.
Other changes include the addition of five new colors – Regal Peacock Green, Some Like It Hot Red, Jungle Green Metallic, Perfect Blue, and Alchemy Purple – and OnStar 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.
The SS’ 6.2-liter V8 is unchanged, producing the same 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque it does in the current 2014 model.
Pricing for the 2015 model will be announced closer to its on-sale date. There will likely be some charge for the manual transmission.
With its powerful V8 and rear-wheel drive chassis, the Chevy SS was already a love letter to car enthusiasts. With the addition of a clutch pedal and a more-sophisticated suspension system, there should be even more to love.
