It’ll be all comedy, all the time for NBCUniversal’s upcoming subscription streaming service, SeeSo. The media company announced Thursday that SeeSo is due to launch in invite-only beta in December, followed by a wide release coming in January. Subscribers will pay $4 a month for ad-free access to both original and classic series, as well as exclusive content, online and through connected devices and other distribution platforms.

With SeeSo, NBCU hopes to create an alternative to big streaming services that helps comedy lovers easily find content that appeals to them. “Big streaming services have created a paradox of choice — they’re great if you know exactly what to watch, but if you aren’t in the middle of a binge, the search can be near endless,” said Evan Shapiro, executive VP for digital enterprises at NBCU. “By focusing on a specific yet large niche, and providing a curated experience, we can help viewers find good stuff they might not or cannot find. SeeSo is your neighborhood comedy eatery, with daily specials from a chef you trust.”

As described on the service’s Twitter account, “Only Seeso gives comedy aficionados access to rare and quotable comedy classics and new original shows you can’t find anywhere else.” Of the classics, some will be new to streaming, including Monty Python’s Flying Circus and The Kids in the Hall. Complete collections will also be on SeeSo, such as Saturday Night Live, along with past seasons of Parks and Recreation, both the American and British versions of The Office, and more. For shows that are currently airing, new episodes will be available the day after they air.

SeeSo’s content will be curated specifically for the site and users will be able to select on-demand playlists each month, complete with video recommendations. New original content will also be consistently added, including HarmonQuest, an animated adventure from Community‘s Dan Harmon.

Seeso shared some of its selling points on Twitter Thursday.

For those worrying that NBCUniversal content may be pulled from Hulu, the media company ensures that pre-existing deals will not be impacted by the launch of SeeSo.

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, will strut into homes in April 2020
Michael Scott on The Office

NBCUniversal's new streaming service now has a name, a specific launch time frame, and some of the network's biggest shows on tap when it starts operations. It will simply be known as "Peacock" -- a nod to the broadcaster's iconic logo -- and will begin streaming in April 2020, according to a press release. Among the headlining shows for the service will be Parks and Recreation and The Office, which will become Peacock exclusives, confirming earlier reports that NBCUniversal planned to pull The Office from Netflix, where it has enjoyed huge success. It's not clear how or when Parks and Recreation will become a Peacock exclusive, as previous reports suggested that NBCUniversal agreed to keep the show on Hulu until 2024 following Disney's majority takeover of that service.

Other NBC comedy favorites like 30 Rock, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, Saturday Night Live, Will & Grace, The King of Queens, and Married ... With Children will be part of the service's offering, though NBC hasn't indicated that they will be exclusives. Peacock is planning some new and original content as well. On the comedy side of the equation, new shows from Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Lorne Michaels, Mike Schur, Ed Helms, Jada Pinkett Smith, Rashida Jones, and Tracey Wigfield are being developed.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in May 2024
Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan as Colin and Penelope looking at each other in Bridgerton.

Netflix has generally weathered the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes better than its streaming rivals. However, Netflix's lineup in May looks significantly weaker than in the recent past. There's a distinct lack of blockbuster movies from other studios. Even Netflix's original series are slowing down this month. The most significant arrival is Bridgerton season 3, and Netflix is splitting that season into two parts, making fans wait until June to get some closure.

There are other highlights, including Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted, Blood of Zeus, and the complete run of the animated spy comedy Archer. But compared to the shows and movies that Netflix had earlier in 2024, it's really lackluster.
